About the Book
In North of the Arctic Circle, author Siegfried Bucher brings together a collection of stories -- some were experienced by Bucher himself, some by companions, some by friends of friends. Bucher conveys his stories with poignancy and drama, all set against the harsh and unrelenting backdrop of the High arctic.
About the Author
Siegfried Bucher, a Swiss-born Canadian, was educated in Switzerland where he received, in 1951, the degree of Engineer. His preference for geophysical science led him to Canada where he was active in exploration for oil and gas, primarily in the Arctic regions of Canada. He was instrumental in developing seismic data gathering on ice. He pioneered the small-equipment Arctic exploration crew and the heli-portable mountain seismic crew, concepts for minimizing damage to the environment by using space age technology together with the re-introduction of man as the key figure. An experienced mountaineer, he made several successful first ascents on previously unclimbed peaks in the Rocky Mountains and Baffin Island.

from the back cover
For the man from the Outside, exploring the Arctic is more a mental than a physical challenge. Monotony, remoteness, the occasional total absence of life and motion, and the ghastly silence all prey on his mind, can induce fear, irrational behaviour, panic and mental breakdown. Natural occurrences, unexpected perils, wrong assumptions can alter, even dash, his hopes; they can destroy the beginner, but also the experienced man. There is no safeguard to warrant the fulfillment of ambitions, or the planned execution of undertakings.
These circumstances, combined with the author's knowledge and understanding of the arctic environment, are the substance of the stories in this book.
