Making the transition from wearing a suit and tie and shaving every working day to wearing hip boots, a wool shirt and growing a full beard was a pleasant change. About the Author Barney Sabo was the son of a coal miner in Western Pennsylvania. Witnessing the tough life of the coal mining profession, Sabo was determined not to work in the mines, and played football and ran track with the hope of getting a college scholarship. After receiving several scholarships, his career was cut short with a knee injury. After college he continued in a variety of professions: gas station attendant, laborer, shipyard welder, Alaska fish-cannery worker, bouncer, military security agent, park ranger, beer deliveryman, and finally as teacher, football coach, and secondary school principal.

I was enjoying life. I had a good job with thirteen years' experience. I had worked hard to put myself through school; I was in Alaska. I had just returned from a trip to Europe with my family. I owned a Mercedes and a Supercub. Most people would have been satisfied to have accomplished any one of these goals, but something kept telling me I was going to operate a business that provided recreation for a lot of people. In my mind's eye I pictured a very large area, where people would come to enjoy themselves.
