About the Book

This manual, based on lectures of Frank J Reilly and art teaching experience of the author at County College of Morris. It covers the fundamental concepts of form, planes, and light-and shade that are also applied to the structural understanding of the human figure and head. Analysis of the Munsell Color Theory, color mixes and their application to figure, portrait, and landscape painting is given in the second part of this manual. The stress on craftsmanship and practice, based on knowledge of principles, structural concepts, and color orientation related to painting techniques will lead to development of creativity in the style of an artist. It is the purpose of this manual to serve as a reference guide for art students, art teachers and art professionals.

Reader's Comments

As a former student who studied under Frank J. Reilly for seven years at the New York Art Students League and was the assistant to Frank J. Reilly, I had the opportunity to review Henry J.T. Doren's book, The Artist's Atelier "Studio - Workshop". I found that its contents, describing various subjects pertaining to the principles of drawing, painting and composition, provided the student with logical and sound subject matter to educate the student.

The subjects included in Mr. Doren's book were: draftsmanship, painting the model, painting landscape, theory of color, light and shade, progression and recession, anatomy of drapery, composition, forms and planes of the human figure and the treatment of edge planes. Mr. Doren's book is only one of two sources, whereby this information based on the Reilly method of teaching art students is available.

The information presented is concise, practical and useful and duplicates what nature created using our limited resources. I highly recommend the book for the serious art student who is looking for a scientific education in art.
