About the Book Entomophobia, the unreasoning fear of insects, may be a major factor for the rate of pesticide use among homeowners. However, before using pesticides, individuals or business owners should carefully evaluate pest problems. If corrective action is necessary, a person can choose from an array of available materials. Consideration of the ecological and biological impacts is necessary prior to treatment. One must consider not only the target pest, but also its natural enemies and non-target organisms that could be affected. Since elimination of a species is not possible, nor responsible, reducing pest problems to an acceptable level through natural means is the goal of this publication. The items in this publication represent a composite of personal experience, testing by master gardeners and others, technical literature, anecdotes from various individuals, and other sources.

About the Author Dr. Robert H. Stauffer was born and reared in Pennsylvania. He earned a bachelor's degree, a master's degree, and a doctorate from The Pennsylvania State University. He was a Danforth Fellow at Cornell University and a Kellogg Fellow at the University of Chicago. He has completed post-doctoral work at the University of Michigan, the University of Colorado, and Harvard University. During his career Dr. Stauffer served as an instructor at The Pennsylvania State University; as an assistant professor and dean at West Virginia University; and as a professor at the University of Minnesota where he now holds the rank of professor emeritus. He headed the establishment and development of the first community college in West Virginia (Parkersburg) where he became the college's first president. The college is now West Virginia University, Parkersburg. He also served as president of Erie Community College in Buffalo, New York, and was president of Pierce College in Tacoma, Washington. As senior consultant for the American Association of State Colleges and Universities, he developed a program whereby U. S. Navy personnel could acquire a college degree while on active duty (SOCNAV). Dr. Stauffer is currently a resident of Las Vegas, Nevada.
