PART I
Sarah whispered in Jason's ear, " Look, they're carrying bags instead of collection plates." Before he could turn, she saw the lanky one raise his sack over Jason's head, then, in a fleeting second darkness enveloped her as a rough bag scratched down over her face and wrapped around her neck. She could hardly breathe, "Jason," she cried; then heard a thud.
Mike slipped quietly into her hospital room. The intermittent rain had stopped and through heavy clouds the sun forced weak rays of light streaming into the darkened room. Its dim reflection grossly accentuated the discoloration over Sarah's pallid face, covered with a taunting expression. His eyes glued to her features. Hidden beneath her bruises he was certain there was a beautiful woman.
PART II
A heavy mist creeping in from the cold sea put a chill in the air. From the harbor distant horns sounded melancholy. Mike could not hear the eulogy, but when the service ended the brisk breezes echoed Sarah's pained cry. His eyes pinned on her while the crowd slowly dispersed. Intently fixed on Sarah, he was unaware of the bitter crying coming from behind until the sobbing woman, dressed in black, fled by; her long silk scarf brushed his face. He hurried to her side. "Mind if I walk with you?" he asked gently.
PART VI. A child is waiting.
Sensing someone's presence, Mike turned to see Sarah standing in the doorway. Her eyes were on Gretchen. He thought he saw a coldness in them, but as she moved slowly into the room he realized they held certain fear. No doubt a fear of becoming involved with the child. For a fleeting moment he wondered if he had done the right thing by bringing the child to her. Hearing movement, Gretchen turned, her eyes, shining in fright, stared up at Sarah. Her face paled. Mike knew she, too, was filled with sudden fear of the unknown. The child's strange and steadfast gaze held Sarah spellbound. Catching her breath, she sighed, "Dear God, she has Jason's eyes." A tranquility began to cover her face.
