excerpt from Omaha Beach
We stayed off that beach for a week, with planes attempting to bomb us, hitting some ships, but not ours. Frankly, I was scared of what would happen to us if a lucky German pilot did hit us!
Came the order to Land All Troops! I was grateful to get the order! But not as grateful as you might think. I had my full field pack on my back, my tommy gun strapped to my side, ninety rounds of ammunition in my cartridge belt, and a bobbing and weaving landing craft below me.
All I had to do was climb down the rope ladder without losing my footing or letting go so that I missed the boat below me! Some men did. No one had time to save the luckless people who went over the side and missed the bobbing and weaving craft below. Besides, the heavy pack would do you in anyway.
Bit I didn't miss the boat! I dropped squarely into the middle of the boat, beaming a smile that could be seen to the moon!
