About the Book
No punches pulled. A fascinating recounting of the author's "behind-the-scenes" wartime experiences. Graphic, often salacious, a four-part book with 29 chapters dealing with "sex, booze, money and the devil." This is the author's fourth book. It was written with astonishing honesty, irony and humor. Military men and their relatives will not be able to put it down.
Review
"This book is a pretty exciting find... I just want to say that this book reminds a lot of the early James Michener in his Tales of the South Pacific, (not the movie, the much-better book of short stories which showed what the real behind the lines war was like). Of course, this book isn't fiction told in the third-person but first-person fact. It has all the humor, pathos, humanity, and sheer historical interest of Michener's "tales" of Americans waging war in the South Pacific -- where part of the war was dealing with the sheer drudgery, boredom, and sometimes danger of getting through the endless days and another part was making sure that the "higher-ups" didn't manage to interfere too damn much with a rational existence. I get the feeling that the author, now apparently in his 70s, took a long look back at his rambunctious 17-year-old self, and despite moments of extreme ruefulness while looking back, has decided that, after all, he could have done worse. Can't close without saying that I really liked this book... the big tough boy who lived it... and the now mature author who knows how to tell a story, and tells it with wit and wisdom." - "Allen", writing on Amazon.com
"Your book is a hit here... Ivy has been translating it for an 83 year old lady who lives in -- and lived in -- Davao during WWII. " Rob Pegg, Phillippines

About the Author
Cap'n Dee (his trade name), has lived an unusual, exciting, and adventure filled life that in itself has all the ingredients of a best seller. After serving four years in the Navy, here are some of the highlights after WW II was over.
Drove Yellow cab 12 hours a night for six months, for 6 months was a fireman on the old Milwaukee RR, a Coca-cola salesman 8 months, and then a detail man for a small drug company for 2 years in Sioux City, Iowa.
In 1952 he started selling insurance, eventually was promoted to executive status during the following 12 years; then resigned in mid-career and became owner-manager of two Northwoods American Plan fishing resorts for the following 14 years. In 1978 at the age of 51 he sold the resorts and retired. Then spent 15 years traveling and fishing the North American continent. Between summers spent in Alaska and winters in the tropics he became a successful real estate investor and has been recognized as an outstanding fresh and saltwater fisherman, with many trophy fish to his credit.
Along the way he was a Boy Scout leader and then a Scout round table commissioner. He founded, organized, and was the first President of the biggest tourism organization in the upper Midwest; served as a tourism advisor to three governors; made a solo five week boat trip down the entire length of the Mississippi and across the Gulf to his then winter home on Sanibel Island. For 7 years he wrote a weekly newspaper column under his byline "A Voice In The Wilderness".
He is the father of 5, grandfather of 6, great-grandfather of 2 (and still counting!). Ten years ago he gave up traveling and started writing books, along with serving as a mentor to many people. AND, more importantly, guiding and assisting his progeny through college. Serene, happy, and at peace with the world his recent picture is on the back of this book.
Sample Excerpts
Introduction
The heroic tales of war, the dry recounting of facts and horrors, along with bitter and sad stories of glory, they all have been told. Now it is time to loosen up a bit and see what happens during wartime when 17 and 18 year old boys are sent overseas and expected to become men and killers. Most of them never see action (well, actually they do, BEHIND the scenes of war, but not exactly 'battle action!) Under the uniforms, they are still 17 and 18 year old BOYS.
(A pre-publicationreview.)
This opinion, perhaps more than anything else, spurred me on to finish writing this book. Initially it was my intention to write under a 'pen name' , because of the sometimes lurid and/or raunchy details. But finally decided to use my trademarked business name of CAP'N DEE, that I have been known all across the country as, for almost 40 years. No, I was not a Navy Captain, my rank is 'self appointed'. Best kind. The four years of 1943 through 1948 that I served while between the ages of 16 and 21 were all as an enlisted man. And so these very true deeds, misdeeds, exploits, and adventures were all mine. While it was a bit painful to dredge up some of them (not to mention a bit embarrassing to put them to paper), I kept in mind the above words of my pre-publication review. We ALL are "shades of gray", and I was no exception.
I don't think that you will find many, if any, books of this nature in print. But there are hundreds of VFW posts around the country, stop at any one of them and eavesdrop on what Vets talk about to OTHER Vets. You will hear stories like this in every Vet club in our country. And any Vet will probably say, about this book, "Yep, that is how it was back then."
While I like to think that in these days I set a much better example for my descendants, and that I have done so for a very long time, wartime does strange things to a man's mind and values. I make no excuses, and no apologies. That was then, this is now. If a chapter offends you, just skip that one. It is not my intention or desire to try to be vulgar or obscene, only to "tell it like it was."
So join me now as I recount what else went on behind the lines. Most military men, past and present, will relate to these true tales of humor, irony, and debauchery.
