About the Author
The author, Carl Cornelius Harnett , was born in Campbellton, Notre Dame Bay, Newfoundland. Upon the death of his father, this seventeen year old, five foot five, one hundred and fifteen pound lad was sent to work in a logging camp. At the age of twenty-two, he traveled to Toronto in search of a better life and, met and married Laurette Nolet in 1954. They settled in Scarborough, Ont. and raised three daughters. He went to night school, improved on his formal education and later studied accounting through Shaw Business Schools. He worked the next thirty-nine years in mid-management in the transportation industry as purchasing manager and cost accountant. He attributes his poetic and creative ability to his Irish ancestry. In recent years, his lifelong interest in writing poetry became more focused, resulting in this personal look at life - past and present.
Excerpts
Whole
What is this beauty
that I gaze upon,
Which lights the dimmest corners of my
clouded soul
And for brief moments eases
all my pain?
Makes the world around me sing
In harmony again
and I am whole.
Who is the keeper
of this healing warmth,
That melts the icy fear which numbs
my mind
And for brief moments eases
all my pain,
Floods my world with radiance
aglow
With sunny days again?
and I am whole.
It is my lover
that is so empowered.
A miracle to make of common
things,
And for brief moments eases
all my pain;
Who lifts me to this apex of
delight
In ecstasy, again
and I am whole.
Great Blue Heron
Great Blue Heron, silent stalker,
Rapier poised, long legged walker, ...
Newborn
I protest
Removal from my cozy nest.
I was warm and safe while there,
I felt no pain; I felt no fear.
I protest
The breaking of my soothing rest
That trust me in a world of pain.
I want my cozy nest again.
My mommy's love seems to take care
Of all my shock and pain and fear;
And when she holds me to her breast,
I again recall my cozy nest.
Quotes from the Play:
Part from Scene 4
Al: I'm sorry Angel, but if it gets rid of Old Dunbar..
Judy: Gets rid of! Dad I told you, I plan to marry him.
Al: (impassioned) But Judy! Baby! Angel! Please listen to your dad. You can't get serious about old Dunbar. I've pictured you with a handsome young prince of guy, not a decrepit old king. I've wanted to walk you down the aisle to a young man waiting there for you, not to old Stan being held up by his support hose. Hell Judy, he may fall over before we make it.
Part from Scene 8:
Al and Pete on Vacation in Australia
Al: Dull who are you calling dull? You're the one who wouldn't wrestle the crocodile yesterday.
Pete: Crocodile? What crocodile? For crying out loud, that was a little lizard on vacation from Arizona, (slight pause) crock my ass, ha! ha! I've seen bigger chameleons.
