The Gallagers
Reeny was the first born son of the Gallagers. Even as he lay on his mother's chest right after birth, he gave his parents the once over. There was something in his eyes that caused his parents to believe this was no ordinary child. He turned over a few hours after birth, which caused the nurses some grief. The little boxed crib seemed too confining to this small bundle of energy. The nurses waved "good-bye" happily to the Gallagers as they left the hospital.
Maxwell followed his brother into the world two years later. Max was a good baby and seldom cried. Reeny, however, made sure he cried quite often. Max came into the world happy and he did not take life too seriously.
Luke Christian Gallager was born five years after Max. Luke was more in appearance like his brother Reeny, but had more of a personality like Max. Luke was resilient and strong. These attributes proved just what he needed with the future he faced. Even in the year 3300, dyslexia was an obstacle to overcome. Diagnosed early, he had adapted well and was becoming quite an artist.
Each of the Gallagers marched to a different drum. This proved overwhelming to their mother, Kay, who as a general rule was a quiet person. A small woman, but somewhat attractive, she went about her life teaching Kindergarten and trying to keep her boys in line. Their dad, Vincent, however was not known for his quiet ways in his youth and sowed a few "wild oats." He now was a straight-as-an-arrow rocket engineer complete with a suit and tie. He expected his children to walk the straight line, but this proved to be a difficult task. He seemed to have a selective memory of his own youth when dealing with his sons.
Kay was a Christian woman, who relied heavily on prayer. Vincent was also a man of faith after a somewhat turbulent young life. He had lost his father when he was five and seemed to have no direction in life, until he discovered the world of science and space. He went to a good college and landed a good job. The obstacles, which he had faced and overcame, may have been the reason for his sometimes lack of patience with his straying sons.
Reeny was a gifted child from the beginning, a teacher's dream. At home Reeny was strong willed, always clashing with everyone and always wanting to be in charge. Kay found her young son a daily challenge. Reeny did not respond well to discipline. When he was young, he liked school well enough to behave. When he reached twelve, this began to change. Kay was getting computer pictures sent to her house daily of just what Reeny was up to. This awaited her daily as she reached home after a trying day with five-year-olds. Kay was upset and Vince did not take the news any better. They wondered what to do with their offspring.
The school had a different idea for Reeny. There was a program on the planet Ameriland for gifted students. It was a place with hands-on learning and good discipline. Kay and Vince hated to admit not knowing how to deal with Reeny. They had been there for him in every way, but the trouble at school grew worse. Would they really consider such a move?
Reeny passed the Ameriland exam, even getting in the top 1 percent. It was considered a real honor to go to the Ameriland School. The school was for the top students in hopes of a future in space exploration. Vince and Kay had to pray hard about it. Kay had always been at home for her kids. They were everything. How could she send one away? Reeny seemed excited about the school and wanted to go, so with heavy hearts they said they would let him try it for one year. Vince and Kay feared their young son would otherwise fall into future trouble. Reeny would be coming home on the summer break, just like all the other schools on Earth. Kay thought she could manage to live through this if Reeny could find his way. Reeny's future seemed set, or was it?
