About the Book

Junie Boy's Funeral takes place in Westfield, South Carolina; an area steeped in traditional southern values. The principle players in this romantic-tragedy are first cousins Dessie Harper and James Albert Banks Jr. A.K.A. "Junie Boy." A product of a broken home, Junie Boy was considered odd by most people. By the time he's fifteen, he suffers a brutal assault by his mother's live-in lover, which prompts him to leave Westfield; vowing to never return. Several reasons bring him back, but not as he left: He has become an accomplished drag queen named "JA Nae." Estranged from most of his family, Dessie continues to embrace her controversial, wisecracking cousin. With Dessie's moral support, Junie Boy lives his life openly. She, on the other hand, has graduated from college with a business degree and is working at a major securities company. Finding success in her career, she longs for an equally satisfying love life. With her youthfulness working against her, she succumbs to the sensual delights of a slightly older, married man.

Junie Boy's murder in this mid-size southern city brings out the best and worst in its residents; not to mention some of the darkest and dirtiest secrets that had lain hidden for years.
