from Chapter Nine
Dan was doing eighty miles an hour on this winding road and the black sedan was right on his tail. Then Dan saw lights reflecting in the cab of the truck followed by the sound of an automatic weapon firing, but the bullets missed Dan's truck completely. The sedan dove to the left to try and pass Dan again, but Dan blocked them. This time the sedan dove to the right side to try again and Dan swung over the right to block them again.
Dan said aloud, "I'm not playing anymore."
He grabbed the sawed off shotgun he got from Jimmy and pulled back both hammers with his thumb. This time when his pursuers moved to the left, Dan let them. As their car moved up, and their right front wheel was parallel to Dan's side window, Dan stuck his right hand holding the shotgun out his open window and fired both barrels at the wheel. The noise from the gun was deafening to Dan, the blast exploded the sedan's right front tire, the pellets tearing away part of the fender, and shattering the windshield and passenger side window.
Dan jumped on the gas pedal again, as the loss of the right wheel took effect on the sedan. The car veered violently to the right, narrowly missing Dan's truck as the driver desperately jerked the wheel to the left in an attempt to keep the car on the road.
from Chapter Twelve
"You've got four packages full of money, don't you?"
"Yes, I do."
"And I've got this pretty little redhead - whadya think? You wanna make a trade, smart guy?"
"Listen to me. I'll give you the money - just don't harm her," Dan said still trying to keep his voice calm, but not succeeding.
"No, you listen to me!" the man shouted back.
"You're not giving the orders here, I am! I want the money and I want it all or your little girlfriend here is dead - you got that?"
Now Dan recognized the voice, it was the big man in the parking lot from the night before.
"I told you, you can have the money. But make no mistake, if you even think about harming her, I'll find you - I'll hunt you down and you'll wish you were dead a thousand times before I finally let you die."
There was a long pause on the other end of the phone. Finally, the man said, "Okay, I'll tell you where to drop the money."
"No!" Dan said in a stern voice. "You said trade and that's what it is going to be."
from Chapter Twenty-Two
It only took about ten minutes before someone came out. Dan had his rifle flat against the building, he was almost invisible, but he had the man in his sights from the moment he came out. The man walked over to the SUV, got in and started the motor. Dan could see him through the passenger side window. It was an easy shot at this distance and Dan would end his life once Jack was clear.
Next, three people exited through the old broken door. It was Jack this time and he had a man on either side with an arm looped around his. Jack's hands were behind his back, tied or taped, but he was walking on his own. They were ushering Jack over to the waiting SUV. Right now, the three men were in a row. Not a good shot, not for Jack.
