INTRODUCTION
No sport receives more attention in Canada than hockey and what better way to enjoy hockey even more than putting out a series of books on NHL players who have represented Canada. Book one is on the World Junior Championships, book two the Olympics, book three the Summit Series/Canada/World Cup and finally book four will be on the World Championships. Why four books? Doing one book of over 800 players would be costly to print, costly to buy and would weigh about 100 pounds, by doing the four books fans can pick which ones they want or buy the whole set. To be eligible to have your name in these books you must have played at least one NHL game and have been on the roster of one of the above-mentioned, Team Canada teams. Why must you have played at least one NHL game? I figure if you are tied with me in NHL games played than the reader won't be too interested in your statistics. Therefore I decided on Canada's NHLers.
Book one is on the World Junior Championships, which unofficially commenced in 1974, officially commenced in 1977. Reason being, the International Ice Hockey Federation (see page two for IIHF information) had the first three tournaments as exhibition only, although there were medals won. The players from those teams are in this book; if statistics were kept and medals were given out then I figure it counts. In 1974 the Peterborough Petes of the Ontario Hockey League represented Canada. The Petes also had twelve players represent Canada in 1980. In 1975 a collection of Western Hockey League All-Stars represented Canada. In 1976 the final unofficial tournament the Sherbrooke Beavers of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League laced up the skates for the Maple Leaf. For four out of the first five official tournaments, Canada sent the majority of the players from the defending Memorial Cup Champion, except for 1978 when an all-star junior team played for Canada. In 1977 eleven players from the St. Catharines Fincups and ten other players from around the CHL represented Canada. In 1979 eleven players from the New Westminster Bruins and nine others from the CHL played for Canada. In 1981 it was ten players from the Cornwall Royals and ten players from the CHL who played at the World Juniors. Since 1982 (the first time Canada won Gold) the best Canadian junior players (ALA 1978) in the world have represented Canada at this IIHF annual event.
What is the Memorial Cup? it is a trophy that has been awarded in Canada for junior hockey supremacy since 1919 and has been the Championship trophy of the Canadian Hockey League since 1972, the Champions of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL), the Western Hockey League (WHL), the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) and the events host city play for the Memorial Cup to determine Canada's junior champion. I do realise that the three major junior hockey leagues had different names over the year's i.e. Western Canadian Hockey League, Ontario Major Junior Hockey League etc. To make things simpler I just used the current names and initials in this book.
