Sample Excerpts

The interplanetary spaceship "Peaceful Endeavor" commanded by Captain Jerome with a crew of 21 scientists and engineers had departed from from planet earth at the dawn of the 30th century AD with the purpose of locating another habitable planet in the universe. Planet earth had been stripped of all the fossil fuels which had been used to pollute the environment to such an extent that now there were as many people dying from the pollution as from the wars intended to conquer areas with slightly less pollution than their own. Due to the uninhibited burning of fossil fuels and its ever-increasing use in fuel cells intended to replace them, the planet's oxygen supply was being depleted dramatically. The corresponding increase in carbon dioxide was approaching a deadly concentration with no solution in sight. Sure, there was lots of oxygen in the water that covered two-thirds of the planet, but it took a lot of energy to extract it and this extensive use of energy was what had caused the original problem in the first place.

The scientists had determined that interplanetary space travel would become practical if the travel time could be reduced to zero. According to the latests theories and the resulting mathematical models this was made possible by exceeding the speed of light while in outer space. The "Peaceful Endeavor" was the prototype spaceship designed to transport people to another planet many light years away with no elapsed time from the moment it reached the speed of light until it slowed down again below it. This was its maiden voyage to a remote planet a few hundred light years away. The round trip was not supposed to take more than a few weeks of earth time.
