About the Book
Chip's Absolutely Awesome Birthday Wish is the first in a series of books dealing with the way children live in different countries. An adventure story about a secret wish Chip has, and how his wish becomes reality. In each book of the series the primary character illustrates, in humorous animal characters, how he or she lives, goes to school, sports and games they like, and secret wishes they have. Before the story ends that character will meet the character of the next book. Each book will have a website including songs, money denominations, common phrases in the language of that country, a photo album of real pictures from that country and recipes of simple common foods loved by the children there. Children will also be able to email characters in the books and get responses.

Excerpts
My grandpa says America is like
little pieces of the world all put
together like a puzzle. Because
people came here from everywhere,
they celebrate holidays in different
ways. I guess some people might
even think we are all mixed up!
Well, that might be true, don't you
think?
Actually, I like it that people from
all over the world come to live here.
I like trying to understand them
better.
*****
Well, I guess some kids might
have a birthday right on Christmas
Day! That would REALLY be bad!
Or maybe the day after, and that
could really be worse!
How can they have a birthday
party and a holiday all at once?
Which presents would be birthday
presents and which ones would be
Christmas presents? It is just too
confusing!
*****
But I will still be happy when
school is out and I can just sleep,
and play outside, go swimming, go
camping, and not have homework!
I think the teachers like summer,
too. I see some of them at the big
swimming pool. They look like they
are having fun, too. Imagine! A
teacher in a bikini! Now THAT is
something you don't see very often!
I have even seen some teachers
playing softball and volleyball.
*****
The very next day, out of a clear
blue sky-that's what people say
when they get a surprise they didn't
expect. Yep, out of a clear blue sky,
my dad just ups and says, "Son, your
mother and I have a plan. There
might be a way for you to go*
ALONE. Do you think you are
brave enough for something like
that?"
Holy cow! That was out of the
clear, blue sky, alright! Like a meteor
just dropped right down on my
head! I didn't know what to say. Me?
A little old, almost ten year old, boy,
going halfway around the world, all
by myself? Absolutely AWESOME!
Then my dad continued with his
idea. "I have a very good friend who
lives in Seoul. He has a wife and
three daughters. He works for our
government there, and I think he
might let you stay with them. I will
give him a call and let you know
what he says. You would have to fly
on a jet, but they would meet you at
the airport, and there is no way you
would get lost before you got there,"
he said.
"Dad, that is my birthday wish! I
wished I could fly on a big jet someday.
I didn't really wish to go to a
World Cup tournament, but that is
even better!" I shouted. "But, I don't
know if I am brave enough to go
somewhere all by myself. I might get
lost or kidnapped."
He just grinned and said, "First,
we would take you to the airport
and put you on the jet. Then, a
flight attendant on the plane will
take care of anything you need.
When you get to Korea, the flight
attendant will take you to meet my
friend and his family in the airport.
There is no way you could get lost
or kidnapped. It would be like me
taking you to your soccer practice,
where the coach takes care of you
until I come back to pick you up."
