About the Book

Eve Hanson had it all ... wonderful childhood, friends, family, successful business and a knack for helping people structure Paradise by creating the wealth of their dreams as reality fast. And then she entered a business that replaced her dreams with nightmares. Practically overnight, at an age when most people are contemplating retirement, she found herself without credit, cash, or credibility; financially devastated by a sociopathic business partner, and emotionally traumatized by an abusive husband. Labeled as grandiose and unrealistic and her exuberance for life classified as "too enthusiastic" and "too happy" by a sadistic psychiatrist, Eve was locked away and forcibly drugged into oblivion in an attempt to break her will and silence her knowledge. She found herself well on her way to a chemical lobotomy, neuroleptic drugs neutralizing her passion, moving her toward a void of nothingness. She called to her Heart's Desire for help, but would it come in time?

What is being said about Heart's Desire

"Heart's Desire is a commitment of deep faith and courage. It will be a positive influence in the lives of those who read it."
-Mike Krzyzewski, Leading with the Heart,
Head Coach Basketball. Duke University

"After getting a rocky start, my husband and I have become rather good at fulfilling Heart's Desire beneficially. People truly do get what they give. Thank you!"
-Victoria Daly, Aiken, SC

"My Heart's Desire was to have enough income producing real estate to provide financial security. I was able to accumulate 13 income-producing properties in one year using the CDs and consulting services AND acquire my dream home. Thank you.
-Ike Smith, Augusta, GA

"I am a lay-minister by passion, but I saw it as an unattainable dream due to personal responsibilities. The Heart's Desire CD's and consulting services changed all that. I converted my home rental to a lease purchase and into home ownership a year later. I turned my pine straw business into a professional corporation. My income increased three-times over what it was a year ago. I am able to spend more time in helping others to create a personal relationship with God. The wisdom of following the path of Heart's Desire is a heavenly legacy of wealth."
-Lee Gilmore, Bartow, GA

"My Passion is teaching others to change their lives for the better by using real estate as a vehicle. I just wish I had started doing my Heart's Desire sooner."
-Ron LeGrand, teacher/author
Fast Cash with Quick-Turn Real Estate

"I was shaking after I finished reading Heart's Desire. I figured that if Eve could survive the devastation of all she held dear, maybe my passion for a home of my own could be my reality. It took less than one year of life changing decisions that I had been afraid to make. Pursuing my Heart's Desire no matter what made the difference."
-Sherri Anderson, Atlanta, GA

Sample Excerpts

Eve Hanson moved quickly through the house, mindlessly grabbing things and stuffing them into a large suitcase. A thought prompted her to leave, but she chose instead to slide into a hammock on the back deck to battle with a nightmare of recent memory.

It had been April Fool's Day and she had come home from the office late in the afternoon to an angry husband. Eve could tell from Cameron's demeanor that she was in for another unpleasant verbal battering. It was not the first time that he had come home unexpectedly or stayed beyond the time he normally left to return to his out of town job. Recently, much of their infrequent conversation had turned into confrontation, and Eve usually left his presence, only to return after she was sure that he had gone.

Eve couldn't seem to dissuade the memory pressing for her attention.

"Why are you home?"

"I want to finish our discussion about the dropping of your sport project. I love you, but not when you do things that don't make sense."

"I love you but? Love is all encompassing."

"This is over," Cameron replied angrily as he paced and waved his hands. "You will not be allowed to continue!"

The conversation became more and more abusive. Eve walked away from Cameron's ranting and dialed the number of her assistant.

"Roland ... Come and get me please."

"I'll be there in a few minutes," then he responded to the concerned nature in Eve's voice. "Is everything okay?"

"No!"

"Okay, I'm coming."

Alarms were sounding in Eve's mind. Her thinking rode on an adrenaline surge; I've got to get out of here. She heard the arrival of her two sons as she went to the small master bathroom at the other end of the house. Then suddenly, Cameron was in the small space with her.

"You are not leaving!"

He grabbed Eve from behind, and slammed her against the wall. The power and force of the move produced instantaneous terror in Eve; surprise and then horror temporarily froze her. She began resisting, writhing and twisting in a effort to free herself, but found her strength dreadfully insufficient.

Cameron's hand covered her mouth with fingers that dug into both cheeks as she felt herself being jammed into the small space between the window and doorframe. The sharp edges of the woodwork cut into her back and side as searing pain shot down her left leg. Cameron pulled her forward and as she struggled to break free, smashed her in the same space again. The impact caused her bladder to release. She felt urine running down both legs saturating her clothes.

Eve managed to pull Cameron's hand from her mouth and issue a blood-curdling scream for her sons. The next instant she found herself on her back on the bed, with her arms and legs pinned so that she could move only her head. She was gripped by mortal fear and continued screaming hysterically.

She saw her sons pulling on Cameron's arms and heard them pleading with him to let her go. As he released the pressure, Eve bolted for her walk-in closet and heard her voice yelling that she would kill him if he ever came at her again. She was sobbing uncontrollably and shaking violently, but somehow managed to stuff her body into clean clothes and exit into the hall.

Roland met Eve in the living room and took her arm. "Let's go."

"That's okay, I'm going to take care of her," Eve's younger son, Josh made his presence known.

Roland's eyes moved between Eve and Josh looking for direction. "Is that okay with you Eve?"

"I...guess...so," Eve stammered. "I'm too afraid to be alone."

Finally, after traveling miles and miles of suffering, with her mind at the mercy of emotion, Eve and Josh arrived at his apartment. They talked long into the night. She kept trying to ponder the circumstances that had set her at war in her human relationships; the crises of decision and choice. There were things that she had weathered and others for which she had failed to seek council.

The mental torture of coping was unrelenting. Thoughts kept filling her with fear and dread as she recalled the behavior that had controlled and subjugated her with fear, humiliation, and intimidation."

The event kept replaying itself and she was racked with wrenching sobs of pain. It wasn't just a matter of dealing with the physical assault, but of coping with the sorrow of the mental anguish concerning the violation of trust. The most personal inner sanctum where she lived had been entered and torn asunder. She tried to tell her mind to stop and finally quieted it enough to fall asleep, only by promising herself that her thirty-five year marriage had ended.

* * *

Eve tried to get her mind to flow with the peaceful motion of the hammock, but she found herself traveling the remembrance of how the verbal abuse and controlling behavior of her husband and that of her business partner had been escalating for months. Abuse seems to pick up momentum when it is supported by people claiming good intention and having another's best interest at heart, she thought. A sharp noise brought Eve's heightened senses to attention and she looked through the sliding glass door to see a police officer entering her house.

She met him in the living room.

"Why have you broken into my home? I didn't hear the doorbell."

He ignored her. "Are you Eva Maria Hanson?"

"No," Eve replied truthfully.

A younger officer appeared.

The first officer continued, "Are you fifty-five-years old?"

She again replied truthfully, "No."

"That's okay, take her anyway,"

The first officer moved behind Eve, handcuffs in hand, "You are going with us."

"Where and why?"

"I have a court order."

"Let me see it please."

She was still calm, but getting more and more afraid.

"No," he said.

Eve grabbed the telephone, "I'm going to call my attorney."

The officers laughed and the one nearest Eve took the phone from her hand while the other forced her hands behind her back. The click of handcuffs and the pinch of a vice-like grip disabled her freedom and she was dragged out the door.

Eve was stuffed into the back seat of one of the squad cars and her purse emptied on the hood. She at first didn't understand what was happening, but guessed that they were looking for identification. Soon the purse was tossed into the back seat with the same disdain as had been Eve.

Anger was now kicking adrenaline, demanding a fight. Eve didn't have a clue as to why she was being taken. She knew that she had broken no law, done nothing illegal. An intense pain took over and demanded attention. She had been forced to sit with most of her weight on her left side, the site of the greatest physical injury from the night before. She felt the handcuffs cutting into her wrists and the numbness of hampered circulation moving up her arms.

"Where are we going?"

"Georgia Regional Hospital."

"What kind of place is that?"

The officer's answer was to turn up the radio; blaring obnoxious music making conversation impossible. Soon the car pulled into the parking lot of a shopping center and another squad car pulled along side. The two officers, both thirty-something-white males began laughing and conversing through their driver's side windows as though she wasn't there.

Eve remained as an unnoticed terrified captured prey in the back seat cage. The poorly ventilated space was as stifling and miserable as an outhouse sitting in the sun on a ninety-degree day. Her hands were losing sensory feeling and she began to cry. The visiting officer finally left. She was again alone with her captor.

* * *

God where are you?
Is that question rhetorical?

Eve's eyes flashed open and she sat straight up in the bed, her senses directing red alert. She quickly took in her unchanged surroundings and then slowly lowered herself to a prone position, timidly venturing a thought response.

No ... I seriously want to know your physical location.
I am omnipresent.
Don't give me big words. I'm asking for some serious help.
Help is a condition of availability that you seldom question.
But I pray.
Your praying is a personal commitment to communicate. When you finish, your solitary thought paths continue to be tossed with the winds of free choice. You have mostly seemed unreal something outside of myself.
Questioning accesses the presence of reality.
I'm too scared and I don't feel safe!

Eve's mind closed with a thud as fear filled the pit of her stomach and branched into other areas of her body.

Why does this unreal stuff keep happening to me?
It's the tug of your heart's desire!

Something was interrupting the probing thought. Eve tried to shake it off, but the poking and prodding was insistent. She rolled over and opened her eyes to greet the confrontation that lurked in the shadows of her dimly lit room.

"I'm Tia, one of the aids. If you don't take the drugs orally, you will be physically restrained and given an injection."

"How can you do this to me without my permission?"

"I'm just following orders."

"Will you sign a statement saying that I refused, but was forced to comply?"

"Yes," Tia whispered.

"They walked out of Eve's room together. The common area was deserted except for three hospital employees at the control counter. Eve asked for some paper and a pen and it was given to her. She quickly prepared an affidavit stating her resolve to refuse medication.

She then asked the four women to witness her statement with their signatures. The supervisor refused and told the others they could lose their jobs if they signed. Eve then showed them the brochure stating that she could not be forced to take drugs.

One of them responded with a cryptic remark, "The doctor has ordered that the drugs be administered."

"The law says that I can't have drugs forced into my body unless I am a danger to myself or others. I've never tried to hurt anyone or myself. I was in a sound sleep a few minutes ago and you woke me up. Do I seem dangerous to you?"

Eve was starting to become frantic. Her salesmanship seemed to have little effect on these folks.

The women laughed while the supervisor insisted, "Take the drugs!"

Eve stared at the two liquids and one pill. She put them together, drank, and pretended to swallow. She turned and headed for her bedroom. When she reached the door, she spit the contents of her mouth into her hand. As she attempted to throw the drugs under the bed, one pill hit something and bounced back where it was visible.

"Ah, I see that. I'll be right back."

One of the attendants had suspected that something was up and shortly she returned with a pill and fruit juice.

"This time swallow it."

Eve stuck the pill under her tongue and drank the liquid. She rolled over on her side, facing the wall and told her tormentor to please leave her alone. After she had gone, Eve spit out the pill and hid it in the toe of one of her socks. A while later she felt a presence in her room and she turned to see Tia in the shadow behind the door.

"Where is that paper you wanted me to sign. I have a pen," she whispered. "Hurry, I'll soon be missed."

* * *

Each hour Eve began surrendering more and more of her mind in a progress of empty thought mired in pitch-black quicksand. There was no way to dig a hole for a reader to step inside the notes she was taking and understand the horror.

At lunch, she started to shake violently. She could hardly get the food into her mouth. When she tried to walk dizziness and nausea passed through her and she found it impossible to form thought patterns in answering questions put to her by staff members. All she wanted to do was sleep, but that wasn't allowed. Whenever she was caught napping in a chair, an aid would shake her awake. It mattered not whether her eyes were open or shut, she was trapped in the fury of a thousand hells.

She began remembering the presence of power, which had appeared in her childhood at the revival. She longed for that essence now. Wisdom had left her standing in the loneliness of isolation.

Eve yelled her frustration.

"God, I won't get on a cross for you!"

A powerful thought penetrated her mind like a bolt of lightening splitting a tree to its roots.

You already have! * * * Rod Hendricks felt the lull of complacency as he moved along the ribbon of asphalt cut through the pine trees of east I-20. It was a two-hour-plus trip between Atlanta and Augusta, and Rod was determined to get some good information to bring back for the Monday morning meeting with the Attorney General.

He had left Harman's house with a sense of foreboding. Every attempt to put off this trip had been met with mental resistance. A line from a Graham Nash song keep playing the reason in his mind, "Make sure that the things you do keep us alive."

Rod had always believed that it was better to be a pilgrim without a destination than to cross the wrong threshold every day. And after that remembering, he had gathered his investigative materials and called home to leave a familiar message with his wife, "Sorry ... I have to go out of town. I'll be back late this evening or I'll call."

Rod set the cruise control and then put his best thinking on automatic. The Eve Hanson case was screaming for his attention; calling for a better effort. Rod grabbed his cell phone and soon heard the voice of Dr. Craven.

"I'm from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation and I have a meeting with the DA Monday morning concerning Eve Hanson. I know we're coming up on a holiday weekend, but I'm almost to Augusta. Could I stop by your office before you leave ... I need to ask you a few questions."

"I'll be here for another hour or so, I'm on my last patient."

"Maybe not doctor."

"You could be right."

"Did I hear correctly that Eve Hanson is being held across the street from your office?"

"Yes."

"Then you must know what goes on there."

"Surprisingly little, but what I do know isn't good."

"How would you rate Eve's need to get out of there?"

"Urgent."

"Life threatening?"

"I think she's in trouble!"
