About the Book

The Master of Speech deciphers the ancient mythology of the Dogon, an isolated African tribe who live along a 200-kilometre stretch of escarpment called the Cliffs of Bandiagara near Timbuktu. The French anthropologist Griaule recorded the Dogon mythology in 1947 in his book, Conversations with Ogotemmêli.

The Dogon had knowledge of the triple star Sirius system that was told to Griaule long before modern astronomers discovered the third star in the system in 1995. The Dogon told Griaule they had obtained their knowledge from amphibious beings who came to Earth from the Sirius star system. After extensive analysis of this mythology, Dorey reveals that these alien beings called Nummo were responsible for human creation through genetic engineering. She further proves that their contact with the Earth resulted in the evolution of most of the world's major religions. The Master of Speech focuses on the connections between paganism, Christianity, and the Greek and Egyptian mythologies. It reveals the connection of the Zodiac to this mythology and refers to the destruction of the Earth as told in Plato's Timeas relating to Atlantis. It talks about the human unconscious and our relationship to time and immortality.

The information presented in this book will be disturbing for some individuals. The facts however speak for themselves. This is a must read for anyone wanting to come to terms with the truth about the beginning of human existence.

About the Author

Shannon Dorey is a graduate of Trent University which is where she first became immersed in the study of history and mythology. Her interests were expanded into religious studies after studying the New Testament at the University of Windsor in 1991. She began her writing career as a journalist and writes and produces the online publication, The Surf's Up, which focuses on Internet related issues. This combination of experience and knowledge is what has resulted in the writing of the Master of Speech.

Chapter 3

Biological Engineering

Because Dogon mythology was presented in 1947, it is not surprising that Griaule and other anthropologists of the time missed the symbolism in the mythology related to DNA. Scientists didn't even start to think about DNA until the early 1950s when British scientists like Rosalind Franklin began to do research into this area. She produced the first photo of DNA that became the basis for the eventual discovery of DNA by James Watson and Francis Crick in 1953.1

The first introduction of DNA in Dogon mythology occurs with the mention of the fibrous skirt. The fibres are the "essence of the Nummo".2 They represent the DNA of the Nummo. The DNA is identified with the fibrous skirt because of the visual representation of DNA as being like the fibres of a skirt.

Ogotemmêli makes reference to the fact that the Nummo make "two strands" from the fibres of "plants already created in the heavenly region". The Earth is "naked and speechless" and the Nummo want to put an end to this disorder. They make one strand for the front and one for the back. Ogotemmêli explains that the purpose of the skirt, however, isn't just for modesty but for the ordering of the universe.3

He makes reference to the "helicoids sign" and "the fibres" that "fell in coils symbols of tornadoes" of the "winding of torrents" and the "essence of Nummo". All of these words indicate that the fibres of the skirt are symbols for DNA strands.4

If you look at this actual DNA strand you can see that its visual representation is like the description by Ogotemmêli of the two strands falling in coils. This picture of DNA from the U.S. Department of Energy's Human Genome Project shows the hydrogen bonds visually looking like broken lines between the double-stranded helix. Ogotemmêli described the hydrogen bonds as a "helicoids sign in the form of an undulating broken line".5

Compare the words used by Ogotemmêli to words used by the U.S. Department of Energy's Human Genome Project to describe DNA saying that, "... DNA takes the form of a highly regular double-stranded helix, the strands of which are linked by hydrogen bonds ... ."7

If you read this passage where Ogotemmêli describes those first changes made to the Earth by the Nummo, you can see that he is talking about DNA. Through these changes the Nummo want to create order on the Earth.

"The Nummo, looking down from heaven, saw their mother the earth, naked and speechless... it was necessary to put an end to this state of disorder. The Nummo accordingly came down to earth, bringing with them fibres pulled from plants already created in the heavenly regions. They took ten bunches of these fibres, corresponding to the number of their ten fingers, and made two strands of them, one for the front and one for behind. To this day masked men still wear these appendages hanging down to their feet in thick tendrils.

But the purpose of this garment was not merely modesty. It manifested on earth the first act in the ordering of the universe and the revelation of the helicoids sign in the form of an undulating broken line.

For the fibres fell in coils, symbols of tornadoes, of the windings of torrents, of eddies and whirlwinds, of the undulating movement of reptiles... They were full of the essence of Nummo: they were Nummo in motion, as shown in the undulating line, which can be prolonged to infinity."8

The Nummo change the Earth animals who are "naked and speechless" by using the "fibres" or the DNA from the Nummo world. The lack of intelligence on the Earth is identified as "disorder" that the Nummo want to end. By combining their DNA with the Earth animals they order the universe. Ogotemmêli makes reference to the fact that masked men still wear these "tendrils" hanging down to their feet. These "tendrils" or "fibres" are an important aspect of the mythology.

The fibrous skirt is used to represent the DNA because of its dual meaning. Once the Earth animals are genetically engineered to become intelligent they are no longer naked and uncivilized like animals. Instead they become civilized and wear a fibrous skirt. In other words through the Nummo's DNA the animals become intelligent.

Ogotemmêli then goes on to say that the fibres were placed over his mother's genitalia. The reference to the mother's genitalia reinforces the idea that the fibres are DNA and related to reproduction. In this symbolism the fibres are essentially placed over the Earth's genitalia. As a result of this act, Ogotemmêli explains that the Nummo becomes a part of human life.

Ogotemmêli said,

"in these fibres full of water and words, placed over his mother's genitalia, Nummo is thus always present.

Thus clothed, the earth had a language, the first language of this world and the most primitive of all time. ... Such as it was, this ill defined speech sufficed for the great works of the beginning of all things."9

By using the Nummo's DNA, the Earth "thus clothed... had a language, the first language of this world." The clothing of the Earth is seen to be synonymous with the genetic engineering. It provides intelligence and a form of civilization to the Earth in the form of language and dress.

Ogotemmêli referred to the Earth previously as being "naked and speechless" which is how animals are defined. So by connecting with the Nummo, the animals become clothed and they learn to speak.

The first important symbol found in Ogotemmêli's conversation with Griaule is the symbol of the "word" itself. The "word" is used as a metaphor for the DNA of the biologically engineered humans. This is because speech is synonymous with intelligence and the only way the Earth animals are able to speak is when their DNA is combined with the Nummo's DNA. The "word" is a key symbol and is used throughout to describe the three different versions of the biologically engineered humans.

Intelligence in any creature is determined by its ability to communicate. According to Lilly, "ape's brains are limited in size, three hundred to four hundred fifty grams. When humans are born and become adults with brains restricted to these sizes they are unable to use spoken language adequately to function in our society. To master speech as we know it, humans apparently require a brain size of at least seven hundred to eight hundred grams."10 This could be why in Dogon mythology the key figure in the mythology is the "seventh" ancestor who becomes the "the Master of Speech". The reference to the number seven may be symbolic of the seventh ancestor having a brain size of 700 grams.

According to Ogotemmêli the first biological experiment, which involved a union between Nummo and Mother Earth, resulted in two types of human/Nummo hybrids being born. One type of offspring was born normal like the Nummo, meaning that this being was an androgynous or a "twin" Nummo. The other offspring was born defective and was a single-sexed male known as "the jackal".11 Throughout the mythology references to "twinness" are in fact a references to self-fertilizing androgyny. Even though the "twin" Nummo are identified as being self-fertilizing androgynous beings, there are references to the fact that the Dogon people perceived them as being feminine. They are synonymous with the sun, which is the female symbol. The jackal on the other hand is identified as being a single-sexed Earth male. He symbolizes the defective offspring.

In this first attempt at biological engineering the androgynous aspects of the Nummo did not carry through to both of the offspring. Ogotemmêli explained how "the original incident was destined to affect the course of things forever; from this defective union there was born, instead of the intended twins, a single being, the Thos aureus or jackal, symbol of the difficulties of God."12 With the first offspring the Dogon perceive the androgynous human/Nummo hybrid as being feminine and good, while the brother of this being the jackal, who is a single-sexed male, is perceived as being soulless.

It is this problem of the "twin births" versus the "single births" or androgyny versus single-sexed beings that contributes to the disorder at the beginning of time. This theme becomes a significant basis of the Dogon religion.

"The jackal was alone from birth," said Ogotemmêli," and because of this he did more things than can be told."13 The jackal was born single-sexed instead of androgynous. This biological defect resulted in the jackal being severed from the spiritual essence of the Nummo.

According to the mythology, the Nummo were perceived as being immortal meaning that when they died and were reborn they were able to remember their previous existence. Immortality in this sense is what we know of as reincarnation. They were also able to connect with each other and other animals and plants on a level that is unknown to humans. The jackal did not have this connection, which is why Ogotemmêli said he "was alone from birth".

The mythology indicates that the reason the experiment failed was because the Nummo neglected to take into account the problems of combining their androgynous DNA with the DNA of single sexed animals. They were also unaware that their spiritual essence was connected with their biological essence and by tampering with one it affected the other. According to Ogotemmêli, the Nummo tried to correct the mistakes they'd made with the first experiment by attempting to make sure that humans like the jackal would never be born again. There is some indication in the mythology that once the first human/Nummo was born defective there was nothing they could do to undo what had happened. It was as if the connection had been made permanently with the Earth and there was nothing they could do to sever it. It was like trying to put the genie back into the bottle. Their only option was to modify what they had created.

As a result they end up creating three different versions of humans. After the "third word" or the final experiment most of the Nummo DNA is removed from humans. This is an attempt by the Nummo to take humans back to some form of their original animal existence so that they can evolve naturally. This is done so that no one will be left out of the world order like the jackal had been in the beginning.

Even though he is confused by it, Griaule makes the connection between the development of the "word" or speech in humans as the reason for human impurity. Griaule said, "The conversation reverted to the subject of speech. Its function was organization, and therefore it was good; nevertheless from the start it let loose disorder."14

This is also why Griaule makes reference to the fact that Ogotemmêli perceives animals as being more pure than humans. This confuses Griaule, who asks,

"Did he mean by this that speech, the instrument of progress, the foundation of the world-order, was in the last analysis a disaster? Did he mean to say that speech was, in a sense, the fruit of disorder, in as much as it was necessary for the restoration of the normal movement of things? Did he mean that, if the world had developed without hindrances from its original basis, there would have been no need for speech, no need for technical processes, for the two things were bound inextricably together? Did he mean that animals were immune from human misfortunes?"15

In answer to Griaule's question, yes that is exactly what Ogotemmêli meant. The Nummo's interference disrupted the natural evolution of the Earth. If humans had not been artificially created, spiritualism and immortality would have eventually evolved just as intelligence evolves. Because other animals were not affected by this intervention they were seen as being more pure than humans.

This symbolism is not unlike that which is found in Genesis in the Bible when the serpent encourages Eve to eat the fruit from the tree of knowledge of good and evil. After eating the fruit, Adam and Eve realize they are naked so they make coverings for themselves. This relates to the same symbolism as the fibrous skirt in Dogon mythology. In the bible God had told them that if they ate from the tree that they would surely die. They obtain intelligence but in the same token they lose their immortality. Just like in Dogon mythology, "death" in this instance does not relate to a physical death but instead it relates to a loss of immortality.

The reference to the "serpent" from the Garden of Eden, also relates to the Nummo, who are constantly referred to as "Serpents" by Ogotemmêli.

The passage relating to the "word" in the book of John may also be identified with Dogon mythology.

In the biblical book of John it is written, "In the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. John 1:1 ... The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us." John 1:1416

In this passage from the book of John it says the "word became flesh and made his dwelling among us." In Dogon mythology the "word" is symbolic of DNA. In this passage the "word" or the DNA becomes flesh. The "word" was with God and the "word" was God. In Dogon mythology it is the Nummo's DNA or "word" that is combined with the Earth animals to create humans. In Dogon mythology it is the DNA of "the Master of Speech" that is supposed to provide hope for humanity and correct the mistakes made from the first experiment. In the book of John "the Word" is a reference to Christ but it could just as easily be a reference to "the Master of Speech" in Dogon mythology.
