While talking, I couldn't help but notice that camel. He was just standing there, staring at me, and I could have sworn that he was grinning! Strange animal, that one! Once againg the old man spoke, "I see you are intrigued by my companion here. Well, son, we have all the time in the world, so make yourself comfortable and let me tell you a story, a story, a story as old as time itself, the story of Sandy Claws, for, you see, that is his name."
***
The baby was a beautiful child, healthy and strong. Abu immediately named his Salim. The new camel - well the new camel was by far the strangest sight ever seen in this village! He came into this world with a smile from ear to ear, which prompted Abu to say to Rifa, "He seems to be very happy to enter into this life!" Then the camel very awkwardly tried to stand up on his feet - and what feet they were! Four of the largest, clumsiest things ever seen! When the beast took his first few steps, sand was flying in every direction and Abu laughed and said, "You are a strange one. When you move, so moves the desert! I think we shall call you Sandy Claws."
***
Instantly, Sandy went into action! With his teeth snapping, and his huge feet flying in every direction, he was a sight to behold! Salim joined the fight with no more than his tree branch. As he started swinging it at the wolves nearest him, the piece of wood turned into a shining sword! "Wonder upon wonders!" Thought the boy. And he swung the sword, and heard it sing. Each time he struck, the severed head of yet another wolf would roll to the ground!
***
At first, Salim was bewildered - him, the homeless boy from the desert, a Royal Guard officer? But then, a delighted smile spread over his face, and eagerly he answered, "Aye, my Lord, it will be great honor to serve you. I shall work very hard to become worthy of bearing the royal colors. I only ask that my camel, Sandy Claws, be permitted to remain with me. He too will serve you well, Sire."
The Calif laughed "You and that funny looking beast! Any mount in the kingdom could be yours for the asking, yet all you desire is not to be parted from an animal so strange that ever my most dour guards laugh when they see him frolicking in the stables. But, if this is what you wish - so be it! The camel that you call Sandy Claws shall be your mount for as long as you are in my service."
***
That evening, after they had their meal and were settling down for the night, Salim told Sandy all about his assignment and what the Calif had said about the palace having ears. "Maybe you could find out something, Sandy," said Salim. Sandy nodded once to let Salim know he had understood, and then he lay down and closed his eyes. "Alright, Sandy, I understand not today. I know you will let me know when you are ready with an answer, for you have never failed me before. Good night now my friend. Sleep well." With that, Salim cuddled up to Sandy and soon he too was sound asleep.
