Peter Legge, LLD, CPAE, HoF, CSP

'It's not just a catchy CAPS maxim that the power of speaking can transform the world. It's been known since ancient times. And the simplest form of speaking is storytelling. A folk art as old as the hills, and yet an agent for profound transformation, storytelling leads us back to the core of human experience, and teaches us how to simply speak, and to speak simply. That's why all world cultures recognize the opening of a story-space with invocations such as "Cric? Crac!" or "Once upon a time..." Such invocations let people know, "Ah! Now the speaking will be different than before, the listening will be different... We are in a new place."
Storytelling opens a no-stress listening space that, curiously, facilitates greater learning even though it appears that the listener is simply enjoying and responding to a story. The way in which material is presented communicates more than the actual spoken word because storytelling, and indeed all speaking, is a performance medium. The transformative power of a story arises from a meeting of imaginations, and relies on the inner preparation of the teller. But oddly, although people remember only 8 to10 percent of content from a presentation, speakers spend most of their preparation time on content rather than delivery'.
