Foreword

The past two decades have seen membership decline in the large mainline denominations. Many studies will affirm the truth of this, and even a cursory reading of church literature reveals many denominational efforts to face this problem and do something to stem the outward flow. But, at the same time, those same years, and even recent ones, have shown that some evangelical denominations have increased in membership.

While an emphasis on this problem has died down in the last several years, there is reason to believe that one aspect of this problem still remains: the apparent neglect of inactive members. Most denominations have this problem, and it is to this matter that this work is directed. A search of the literature does not reveal that a great deal of attention is being given to the problem; therefore, it is the hope of the writer that this work will at least focus attention on the matter and possibly arouse some special interest in it.
