About the Book

Memories of a high school teacher and coach of three sports - a "ham radio" operator since 1953 who is Net Control of the Military All-Services Net and Faculty Adviser for student Club Stations. He becomes Chair of a University's Civil Engineering Department, and for thirty years teaches Physics and Math at another college winning a "Teacher of the Year" Award. Reads like another "Good-bye Mr. Chips!" script.

"You tricked us into learning physics by telling our all male high school class, 'Every normal, teenage American male is inherently interested in automobiles.' That was certainly true in the 1950's, and then you proceeded to teach all of physics - sound, mechanics, electricity, light, fuel systems, etc. - by applications to autos." - M. Posa, High school student.

"Your Memoirs recall for many of us the joys and rewards of teaching.. You are so lucky to have had a long life in the teaching profession. - B. F., your colleague at Broward Community College

"Congratulations ! We honor you as "A Golden Poet of 1991 for your poem, "Lost and Found: ". - Contest Judge.

"Your Memoirs are interesting, enjoyable reading, even though I did have to occasionally pull out the dictionary. You are STILL the teacher!." - F. K., e-mail contact.

To the friends of Professor George Spahn

In September 1937 the Center of the Universe was a short city block in Cleveland, Ohio, East 107th Street, between Carnegie and Euclid Avenues. It was the home of Cathedral Latin High School, a Catholic boy's school, under the direction of the Brothers of Mary. It was likewise the home of Rev. Brother George Spahn, S.M. The faculty residence was in juxtaposition to the high school. Cathedral Latin was Brother Spahn's first teaching assignment. How Professor George Spahn got to Cathedral Latin and his circuitous journeys thereafter is the story of this book.

My classmates and I are greatly indebted to Brother Spahn. They share my enthusiasm. He graciously opened the doors of the World of Knowledge. He fixed there in the open position so that they would never again be closed. He showed me my first surgical operation. It was a very beautiful dissection of a live frog. He gave special attention to the beating heart. Throughout my fifty years as a practising peripheral vascular and heart surgeon I have always tried to fashion my surgical procedures by what he showed me that day.

Brother Spahn was always immaculately dressed, clean white shirt, black tie and Prince Albert coat. He was disciplined, on time and well prepared for his classes. He was friendly and we had no difficulty comprehending his lectures. There was no need to spend time on behaviour for we sat with attention and measured each of his words with respect and enthusiasm. It is hard to imagine that time could have changed classroom conduct so completely that you can hardly believe my assessment as true. But these were the years between the Great Depression and the Second World War. Our attitudes were different.

Professor George Spahn's life has been filled with success and tragedy, joy, love and bereavement. It has been filled with glorious music and sad disappointment. You will not be able to put this book down. I have read it many times. You will want to read it over and over again and send a copy to your friends. It is a story of great courage and unusual accomplishment.
-- John J. Kralik, M.D., F.A.C.S.
