About the Book

Many poems in this book of poetry and a short story were motivated by past and present dreams that the author has transposed into words and two languages (English and Spanish). The author turned those dreams into poems and managed to introduce her culture, people from her old neighborhood, relationships, memories of loved ones, and love at its highest and lowest. It's a poetic journey giving the reader a taste of life with its twists and turns.

The short (and only) story in the book, "Lila Archmon" is filled with descriptive words that takes the reader onto a dream-like passage of fantasy transporting them into the garden with Lila and her precious friends. The poem "Salsa" introduces the reader to a dance that has withstood the passage of time - it is certainly a "feast" for all. "Soy Boricua" expresses the pride of being Boricua and gives a history as to the roots of the Puerto Rican. The two poems (and title of the book) "Daughter of the Sun I and II" can be interpreted by the readers, as they desire. When various people were asked to give their meanings of the poems, the multitude and variety of renditions were astounding.

About the Author

Carmen Sol Feliciano was born in Puerto Rico. Her family moved to Sleepy Hollow, New York, in the mid 1950's. This is Sol's first bilingual book of poetry and short stories. Numerous poems in this book were inspired by dreams, past and present. It is dedicated to her parents, Antonio and Julia Molina, who kept their culture and traditions alive for their four children (Tony, Sol, Rosie and Rico) while adapting to the newness of the American way of life. Daughter of the Sun is a memoir for her daughter, Elysia, with the special message "the sun will always keep you warm."

Excerpts

From "Lila Archmon"...
seemingly a thunderous cloud ... in amazement, but not frightened, she could see an immense colorful mist coming closer and closer. It sweep by her, faintly gliding through her, momentarily taking her breath away, touching her heart, which beat so rapidly, she thought she would fall in a faint.

From "Going Home" ...
We cried,
the way children cry
when they're hungry or scared
watching the plane amid the clouds
taking them home, to La Isla.

From "The Lady" ...
Not long after, she visited in the daylight;
not revealing herself; yet,
I knew she was near.
I felt her, as leaves feel the wind
on a breezy autumn day.
Her essence comforted me.
The Lady, my shade, my shadow,
there, when life turned cruel,
unfair, or confusing to me.

From "Daughter of the Sun I" ...
I am Daughter of the Sun.
Come to my beach,
absorb my spectrum,
my cycle of life.
My want for you
phenomenal

From "An Old Dream" ...
I shouldn't be afraid, but the silence is menacing. What could possibly be beyond these rooms? Why am I here? What am I searching for? Mostly I wonder, why I return.

From "Discovering" ...
Your lips teasing, exploring,
made my heart palpitate faster,
unfolding some fears, some wants, some delights.
Your lips desirable,
soft as rose pedals.
Your lips still igniting me,
I long with anticipation
