Coyote Goes Down to the Sea

by Molly Cruz

28 pages; Saddle stitched; illustrated; catalogue #04-0118; ISBN 1-4120-2290-8; US$15.95, C$18.34, EUR13.10, £9.17

The coming of age of a little coyote, who worries about what he does not understand, until he goes out to see for himself and finds that the world is very beautiful and not so scary after all.

About the Book

Coyote Goes Down to the Sea tells of the coming of age of a worrisome, observant young coyote living in the forest, where his glimpses of the sky are incomplete and mysterious. One night he takes his first walk alone by the sea where the sky stretches high around him; and seeing the sun and moon dancing across it, for the first time he understands that things do make sense. The author emphasizes the non-verbal nature of the animal mind, and includes at the end a long-distance shot of the solar system, challenging the young reader to take an even wider look at the truths behind the story.

About the Author

Molly Cruz grew up on the beach in Long Island, New York, and after much city dwelling, art schooling, and raising her two sons, she directed a small private school in California for 20 years.

She has found her way back to the beach; only this time on the West Coast of Costa Rica, where the moon follows the sun across the huge equatorial sky, which inspired this story, and where, like Coyote, she is very happy.
