The Sherlock Holmes stories from Sir Arthur Conan Doyle have been in continuous publication for more than 100 years, loved by generations of readers. They have been adapted (sometimes badly!) for the stage, motion pictures and television.
This book consists of 32 extended excerpts from the Sherlock Holmes stories as Quotation Puzzles (also known as Acrostics). These puzzles are completed by solving definitions and transferring them to the puzzle block which forms the quotation. No knowledge of the stories is required to solve the puzzles.
Uniquely, each Quotation Puzzle includes an introduction which explains the context of the quotation being solved. (See the sample puzzle below)
The book includes a selection of variety puzzles which also relate to the Sherlock Holmes theme.
A special feature is "The Best of Sherlock," a synopsis of the 12 best Sherlock Holmes stories as selected by the author.
HOW TO SOLVE QUOTATION PUZZLES
Your completed puzzle will be a quotation from a Sherlock Holmes story which you will complete in the puzzle diagram.
- STEP 1 Read the definitions and fill in as many of the solutions as you can. It only takes a few words initially to lead to solving the puzzle.
- STEP 2 Transfer the letters you fill in (according to the numbers below them) to the puzzle diagram.
- STEP 3 You can then begin to work the puzzle "backwards" by filling in letters in the puzzle diagram and transferring them back to the word list. The letters in the diagram boxes indicate the lettered definition. This will give you clues to solve additional definitions.
There will be many clues from the diagram to help you solve the puzzle: Short words are often THE, AND, TO, OF and many similar words; word endings such as -ED -ING, -LY, and -TION are common; and there are many common letter combinations you can try. Also, since the quotations are from Sherlock Holmes stories, there will be obvious words to look for such as HOLMES and WATSON.
Do not hesitate to try reasonable words or letters either to solve the definitions or to fill in the puzzle diagram. If you choose wrong it usually becomes apparent when transferred to the other section of the puzzle.
One more help: The first letters of the word list (reading from top to bottom) spell out words relating to the Sherlock Holmes story from which the quotation was taken.
Sherlock Holmes Quotation Puzzles Vol. 1 includes:
- Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson meet in "A Study in Scarlet"
- A king is the subject of blackmail in "A Scandal in Bohemia"
- A feared sea captain is murdered in "The Adventure of Black Peter"
- Sherlock Holmes adopts one of his many disguises in "The Man With the Twisted Lip"
- A deceitful client is hanged in "The Resident Patient"
- A fateful encounter occurs with Sherlock Holmes' archenemy in "The Final Problem"
- Sherlock Holmes practices "mind reading" in "The Adventure of the Dancing Men"
- In retirement Sherlock Holmes takes up a serious hobby in "His Last Bow"
