ABSTRACT
INTRODUCTION.
Initially some parts of this research was presented to the
University of Sheffield to partially fulfil the
requirements of the award of the Master Degree in
Education at the University of Sheffield in 1995.
The aim of the research was to study the cultural and
religious requirements of the British Muslim
community by exploring the need for inter-cultural
communication, cross-cultural awareness and equal
opportunities issues.
The ratioanle for the research was to produce a piece of
work that would be useful for those that work in the
field of education, for community practitioners in other
professions, and for those who work with the Muslim
community in Britain. It will be useful for those who
wish to enhance their knowledge and understanding of
the Muslim community.
The work has therefore been presented in the following
context:
CHAPTER ONE.
Chapter One introduces the research, it contains a
discussion of the background to the research, the
rationale and a brief introduction to each chapter.
CHAPTER TWO.
Chapter two discusses the various research methods
that are used in educational enquiry. It contains the
result of the survey that was conducted, to discover the
views of colleagues that work in the field of education.
It includes an explanation of the advantages and the
disadvantages associated with a variety of research
methods, and it justifies the choice of method selelcted
for the present study. A list of references used in the
chapter is included.
CHAPTER THREE.
Chapter three examines the cultural and religious
background of Muslims in Britain, and provides an
insight into the role of cultural diversity in the lives of
young Muslims. It contextualises the present research
within exisiting literature that addresses the issues. As
part of research requirements, the past, present and
future of the Muslim community in Britain is examined
CHAPTER FOUR.
Chapter four concludes the study, and includes a
literature search on issues pertaining to multiculturalism,
inter-cultural communication, cross-cultural
awareness, equal opportunities and access to adult
education. Relevant and significant literature has been
selected for reading. The precise objectives, for this part
of the research, were to examine what has been written
by others, and to reflect on ones own personal
experiences about the importance of inter-cultural
communication, and cross-cultural awareness for the
quality of service provided to clients, and for the
stability of society at large. This is related to the field of
adult education, community education and other areas.
The importance of these issues are assesed for their
ability to meet the requirements of equal opportunities,
as currently required by most organisations. These
topics are integrated with discussions on the issues of
ethnicity, and the realities of Britain as a multi-cultural
society. The discussion includes the issue of wider
access to adult education for adults from minority
groups. It is concluded that rapid development in the
awareness of multi-culturalism is needed in the area of
education.
