Introduction
My interest in our Irish roots began as a wee lad. I remember hearing a plethora of wonderful stories of past and present during the summers at my Grandpa's country store. Tucked away in the Oak Grove community of Mocksville, North Carolina, the older gentlemen would gather daily at the store enjoying morning or mid-day snacks, as well as each other's company for discussion and "story telling".
The discussions ranged from sharing views of local and national politics, farming successes and advice to community happenings and stories from their past. I learned about hunting, fishing, politics, historical happenings such as the Great Depression, World Wars I and II, and all farming aspects from cows and horses to crop rotation before I was seven years old. I loved every minute of it. All the gentlemen had something important to say and wanted to listen as well as being heard. Their mutual respect for each other was obvious and there wasn't much they didn't talk about. As a young boy, I was simply blown away by the marvel of these older gentlemen. They were the genuine, colorful characters of the community and my childhood.
It was a blessing for me spending time at grandpa's store and listening to stories my grandpa and other local gentleman told about the good old days. I especially remember many family stories, including how life was when my grandpa was a boy growing up in Chesterfield, South Carolina. It was here when I first heard tell of the association with our family and Ireland. It was here that my passion for oral tradition, history, family and an interest in our Irish roots were born.
As I got older, time and life took its course. Now, nearly all the unique characters of my childhood have passed on. Although gone, they are not forgotten and they hold a truly special place in my life. My interest in the roots and history of my family line from Ireland to North Carolina burn deep within me.
I am grateful for the genealogical research of others in my family. It has inspired me with my own research to continue to make a connection back to Ireland. It has been a challenging and adventurous journey. I have met many interesting people along the way, traveled here and there, learned more about my own family history, and discovered more of whom I am and where I come from.
This is a story of how my family evolved from Ireland. Like my family's experience, it is a journey.
