About the Author

After a closed-head injury from an automobile accident left author Karen Renée Gomez with cognitive deficits and an inability to understand her pre-med courses, she had to drop out of Indiana University during her senior year. Her intended career in medicine came to a screeching halt.

However, in keeping with her altruistic nature, she has been helping people deal with personal crises, one injured person at a time, over the past 24 years in her career as a medical malpractice/personal injury paralegal, while at the same time, conducting her own 30-year life experiment with "New Age," as well as ancient, natural anti-aging methods and techniques (for prevention and rejuvenation), as well as controlling her own stress, and managing her own pain without drugs.

Drawing upon experiences from both her medical/legal career and 30-year life experiment, she offers a unique perspective on anti-aging and overall well-being.

It is the result of my own 30- year life experiment, seeking natural anti-aging products and techniques. Eight years ago, when I first started putting this program together, I called it the "Re*née System" (from my middle name), sort of a play on words, "née" being French for "born" (re-"born"). A total mind and body rejuvenation program to re-fresh, re-plenish, re-think, re-store, re-fine, re-joice, re-vitalize, re-new, re-generate, re-lax, and re-duce stress. The whole concept is essentially the same, but with a new name.

I've been experimenting with and using the elements of BIOSynergenics[TM] over the last 30 years for anti-aging, relaxation, building confidence, developing a positive attitude, interacting with people, pain control, and coping with stress. Ever since I was in my 20's, people have told me that I don't look my age. I was still being asked for ID when I was in my 40's!

I turned 51 a few months ago, and people still guess that I'm in my 30's. For years, when I was asked what my secret was, I just laughed and said I did it with mirrors. My little secrets were mine - I wasn't about to share them with anyone. But the older I got, I started to feel a little guilty about it. Here I had been conducting a virtual life experiment, testing literally hundreds of things that I had either seen, heard or read about over the years, eliminating what didn't work, and without plastic surgery, a face lift, Botox®, collagen injections, laser or chemical peels, dermabrasion, or expensive facials, lotions, potions or creams, still managed to look at least 10-15 years younger than my age. My skin is still tight, smooth and wrinkle-free, and I don't have deep lines on my forehead, or around my eyes or mouth.

In 1996, when I finally told someone about all of my little secrets, she told me I should share them and write a book. After some thinking, I started to seriously consider it. Most books that you see on diet, exercise and beauty tips have been written by an "authority" on the subject because of their profession or research findings, or by a "current" celebrity whose name alone will sell the books. Usually their photograph has been airbrushed and retouched, or you later find out that they had surgery or other procedures to enhance their appearance. (Last year, the big news was that actress Demi Moore spent over FOUR HUNDRED THOUSAND DOLLARS to re-make herself before she turned 40!) Since I'm not an expert, a professional or a celebrity, I think the average person will be able to relate better to me and the ideas in this book. I've already done almost 30 years of experimenting, weeding out what works and what doesn't work. I'm just an average person myself. I'm not a health food fanatic (but I do try to eat healthy), I exercise (but not as much as I should), I drink wine occasionally. I have a stressful job, do the same mundane everyday things the average person does, and have the same kinds of everyday problems the average person has.

I had acne and a horrible complexion from the time I was 10 years old until I was 21. I was overweight, had low self-esteem, and absolutely no confidence as a teenager. I had no direction, no goals, no ambition for many years. Looking back on that time of my life, I'm sure I was depressed. I never had a date until late in my senior year, and I never went to the prom. My mother was a housewife, and extremely unhappy most of the time. She was hypercritical of everything I did, and extremely argumentative. Conversations with her were kept to a minimum, always trying to avoid an argument. She would ground me for the slightest "infraction" so I would be home to cook, serve and cleanup at her many parties. Once I was grounded just for rolling my eyes at my girlfriend when she yelled at my little brother to finish his dinner ~ she was having a dinner party that night. I was also grounded and couldn't watch TV if I didn't bring home all A's and B's on my report card (In fact, if I was grounded, no one bothered talking to me. I was a non-person.) I spent a great deal of my adolescent and teenage years in my bedroom. I had no social life at all.

My father was a traveling salesman, so he was hardly ever home, except on weekends, when they would fight most of the time. On weekends, everyone "walked on egg shells." They were both heavy drinkers, and their marriage was turbulent. My father pulled out his guns frequently and threatened to commit suicide. Once, after getting drunk at a neighbor's party, he came home, got a gun and was threatening to kill the guy (a lawyer). Thank God my boyfriend was able to take it from him before he got out of the house. Once he took something, and he was taken to the hospital by ambulance to have his stomach pumped. I cannot remember getting any parental guidance or advice from either of them - they were simply, there. We never had any meaningful conversations. The only "advice" I ever remember receiving from either of them was "Girls don't hold hands with each other" - I think I was about 5 or 6 - after my mother saw me holding hands with my friend as we ran up the hill to the school to play on the swings. I alienated myself from my family, and pretty much raised myself, having to figure everything out on my own. I had "issues" for years. My father died in 1988, and I still have no relationship with my mother.

On top of the emotional pain that I suffered for years while living at home, I later suffered from extensive psychological and physical pain. I've been raped twice. I was in several serious car accidents. A mean drunk who crashed our party pushed me down three flights of concrete stairs when I was in Fort Lauderdale after graduation from high school. During the summer when I was nine, I fell off the top bar of a swing set onto my head, and several weeks later, I fell onto my face trying to do a handstand on a slippery diving board. (That was a helluva summer!) I've torn ligaments in knees and my back. From my accidents, my neck and back are not in their normal curvature. I've torn tendons in my arm and shoulder. I suffered a closed-head injury in a car accident during my junior year of college which affected my ability to understand math and abstract ideas, which drastically affected my ability to learn genetics, microbiology, and some other pre-med courses, so I had to drop out of college during my senior year. I have two herniated discs in my back which they can't operate on, and nerve damage which causes burning and shooting pains down my back and legs, especially during bad weather.

All of these injuries have taken their toll and still cause some pretty significant pain on a daily basis. But, because I'm allergic to 99% of prescription pain medications, I've had to find ways to deal with the pain without drugs or surgery.

I've already been 20-, 30- and 40-something, and now I'm in my 50's. I have just entered menopause (lots of fun - but as you'll see later in this book, there are natural ways to deal with this phase of life, too). This book contains all kinds of information applicable for each decade of a woman's life. Women in their 20's and 30's can use the some information for prevention, and more mature women can use it for rejuvenation.
