About the Book In 2002, shortly before she passed away, one of the last living speakers of Sto:lo Halq'emeylem (a Salishan language spoken in Southern British Columbia) visited a small recording studio in Chilliwack, where she recorded an oral version of a story about the creature Sasq'ests (Sasquatch). Her story has now been developed into a multimedia project consisting of the following components: 1) A storybook version, with text entirely in the Halq'emeylem language, consisting of 80 original full-colour illustration panels drawn by a Sto:lo artist. 2) A high quality stereo audio version of her story, suitable for playback on home or car stereo, including complete Halq'emeylem and English version of the story as told by the speaker. 3) A CD-Rom version, which allows the user to view the illustrated text on their computer panel by panel while listening to the phrases. The CD-Rom version also includes a phrase-by-phrase translation, with a phonetic transcription and grammar notes on each phrase. This story is essential reading, viewing, and listening for anyone interested in learning Sto:lo Halq'emeylem, as well as for those with an interest in the stories, language, and cultures of the First Nations people of Canada. The format makes it useful to learners at all levels, and accessible even to those who have no knowledge of Salishan langauges. About the Author How The Book Was Written: Credits and Acknowledgements In 2000 and 2001, the Sto:lo Shxweli Halq'emeylem Language Program at Sto:lo Nation was involved in an extensive project to record a 'talking dictionary' of the Halq'emeylem Language with fluent Sto:lo elders. One afternoon, we happened to have 15 minutes of recording-studio time left after we had recorded our list of words for the day, and the elder we were working with offered to record a story for us. That recording became the Sasq'ets story. The sections below explain how the story, which began seemingly by chance, came to have the form in which you now see it. Yamalot (Rosaleen George) was the elder who told the story. She was born in Chehalis, B.C, in 1919 (and her accent tends to reflect that sub-dialect of the Halq'emeylem language). Yamalot passed away in February 22nd, 2002, about a year before the illustrations and formatting for story were completed. The story was illustrated by Jared Deck, a young Sto:lo artist from Tzeachten. Jared also did the sound editing, and much of the technical work on layout and graphics for the story. The story was put into written form with the assistance of Elizabeth Herrling, another fluent elder. The staff that wrote out the text, based on Elizabeth's translations was Diana Charlie and Strang Burton. Elizabeth, Diana, and Strang all work at the Sto:lo Shxweli Halq'emeylem Language program. The multimedia CD-ROM program and the linguistic notes that appear on the 'info' pages were both developed by Strang Burton. Thelma Wenman, coordinator of the Sto:lo Nation Shxweli Halq'emeylem Language Program, handled administration and coordination for all staff involved. The recording was made at Beat Productions, a recording studio in Chilliwack BC, with the technical assistance of Peter Kilgour. The morphological breakdown of the words, and assistance with the linguistic notes and IPA transcriptions, were provided by Martina Wiltschko, a professor of linguistics at the University of British Columbia. Martina in turn had assistance in this work from two of her students, Jason Brown and James Thomspon. This program was funded through the generous support of the following funding agencies: First Peoples' Heritage Language & Culture Council & First Peoples' Cultural Foundation.
