About the Book

The Reinsmen focuses on the years when African-American jockeys were prominent in the horse racing industry, 1875-1902. It is a historical tribute to the jockeys and their horses who have won the Kentucky Derby. The full color pictures of the horses as well as the jockeys are one of a kind classics.

About the Authors

LeRoy McKelvy has collaborated with his wife Myrna Banham-McKelvy to put together this historical information. this is Their first published work. The inspiration came from a Black History Month special on T.V. highlighting African-American jockeys. The McKelvys are very excited to share this information with the public as a part of preserving African-American history.

The starter cracked his whip and the horses were racing. Apollo, second from the outside was on his way to victory in the eighth Kentucky Derby. Babe Hurd rallied Apollo to a half-length victory in the 1882 Kentucky Derby.

Americans were given an extraordinary look into the minds of one of its greatest athletes. Isaac Murphy had no instructions, except that he was to win the race. With such instructions, Murphy was called by racing experts "the greatest jockey in the history of the sport.

In the year 1892, Alonzo "Lonnie" Clayton was aboard Azra for the best birthday present anyone could ask for. He had just turned 15 when Azra made him the youngest rider ever to win the Kentucky Derby. All of the Derby jockeys that year were black.
