About the Book

This is the funny and often heartbreaking story of one girl's transformation from shy, awkward, school girl to feisty, capable business woman ready to take on the world despite the challenges. She discovers that even a full blown hurricane cannot prevent her from realising her goal of saving her business and taking care of her family.

Bridget Flanigan and Marsha Callaghan are 'best friends forever' since boarding school. Bridget, timid and shy with a talent for worrying and wishing her life could be more exciting, yet knowing she hasn't the courage to make it so. Marsha, fearless and outgoing always taking what she wants without thinking about the consequences.

As they leave their student days behind and get their first taste of freedom working for the summer on the Isle of Man, Bridget soon finds out that where Marsha goes chaos is not far behind.

After school Bridget leaves Sam Cunningham (who hasn't proposed to her) stranded in his half-built house and follows Marsha to London where she finds a job as a waitress in a little Italian restaurant. Marsha becomes a dancer in a Soho Club. But trouble is brewing for the two friends as they come face to face with the seedy side of city life.

Marsha fulfils her destiny by marrying a wealthy banker, relishing her role as 'Lady of the Manor'. Bridget returns home twelve thousand pounds richer. She is re-united with Sam and they set up home near the small seaside village of Dunangle on Donegal's West Coast. Soon Bridget's days are filled with the constant demands of her ever-increasing family, Sam's new fish-farming company and her employer Patrick Gillespie.

In February 2000 Bridget and Sam celebrate Valentine's with a romantic dinner, unaware that a Tropical Storm named 'Cleo' is heading straight for them. Bridget's life is suddenly turned upside down. Her beloved father killed, Sam horribly injured and their business lying in ruins. Is this her point of breaking or is it at last 'the making of Bridget Flanigan?'
