About the Book
Come if you dare for a quiet walk in Western Canada's lively woods. Twenty-seven real life short-stories will bring you into the beautiful rural and remote wilds of British Columbia, Yukon and Alberta. As you climb rugged mountainsides and explore forested valleys.
Close and energizing bears, cougars, moose, wolverines, fox, beavers, owls and many other wild animals large and little. Such experiences have taught him much-valued lesions, a positive never-ending appreciation and definite respect for Nature's infinite living expressions.
When one is out alone and with benign intent in the wilds of Nature, uncommon or intimate experiences sometimes come: effecting unexpected deep psychological, positive emotional and even inner spiritual change. Thus Nature can be a great teacher... speaking to humanity in multifarious nonconceptual ways. Nature is not necessarily an enemy to be feared, defeated or destroyed but is instead a realm for living, learning, appreciating and caring.
Comprehensive notes give tips on how you can hike or camp safely and cleanly. Jargon and terminology are defined and a variety of relevant information included. Elaborations are made on various subjects mentioned in the book: animal behaviour, ecology, politics, economics, society, philosophy, human mind and the power of Nature. The author's views are derived from a combination of direct experience, observation and reason.

About the Author
As a boy in the little rainy town of Alberni, British Columbia, wildlife of all sorts were almost daily experiences for him and other boys of the neighbourhood. Their playground was most often in the woods and along creeks near town. He and several other boys raised young crows as pets. And almost all of them went barefoot every summer, all summer... when school was out. His early years being so saturated with Nature's living things, his identity developed much tied with them.
Teenage years were in the semi-desert north Okanagan town of Vernon, B.C. where hiking the cactus hills above town was a favourite pastime; his first experience with bluebirds, meadowlarks, magpies and gopher snakes were there.
Then he went the big city for a few years, to the University of B.C. and Simon Fraser University with the goal of becoming a wildlife biologist but did not succeed. Afterwards he worked in various capacities for MacMillan-Bloedel, Canadian National Railway, Canadian Pacific Railway and the Ministry of Highways. During those years he would often wander the woods, hills and mountainsides as a part-time prospector. For about 15 years he worked in the edible wild mushroom business while simultaneously prospecting. All of these occupations brought him to rural and remote places where contact with Nature's life would maintain and reinforce his appreciation of our little-understood non-human earthly companions.
During these early years he had a natural inclination for drawing animals, which went into neutral through teenage years and later. Then in the 1980s and 90s he carved hardrock and burlwood and also began to paint his lifetime love: wildlife and Nature. Now, he's just began producing from his paintings: limited edition prints with image size about 16 by 20 inches. These beauties, printed on canvas by the Giclee process with archival ink, are limited to 55 only and can be viewed at his website www.mountainwild.ca.
