About the Book

The ispiration for Basil came from the author's mother, Clara Alice's hobby of teddy bear making. Her teddies are beautifully made from expensive materials and joints. On experimenting one day she made a little teddy from cheap material and domed the joints. This little teddy took the attention of the author's grandchildren who with glee pulled it to bits and put the head where the leg should be. Hence the idea for the story.

The bears Snobby, Haughty, Grandma, Grandpa and Giggles are introduced at the beginning. Clara Alice, the creator of the bears, decides to go shopping for something different. She finds the remnants of a yellow, fluffy material at a sale, which she thinks will make a good teddy bear. She also find some big domes to put him together.

She goes home and makes him, but the other teddies are very snobby and look down their noses at him. Then the grandchildren arrive and pull him to bits, putting his head where his leg should be and throwing him about. Basil is very offended and the other teddies laugh at him. However, Nana Calra Alice picks him up as he tries to run away and tells him that he is the one who is most loved for he gets all the attention and that the other teddies are just playing a superiority game. Basil thinks about this and comes to the conclusion that he is very unique and special and that he doesn't have to be like all the others.
