About the Book

A Message from Our Principal

I have been the Principal of Ruth King Elementary for the past five years. In the Spring of my first year at the school, the staff did a needs analysis and along with the parent community decided to make Social Responsibility a goal of the school. Since that time, our school and parent community have fully embraced our School's Mission Statement which is "ROCKS". The acronym stands for: Respect/Responsibility; Ownership; Co-Operation; Kindness; Safety. This message is constantly reinforced throughout the school through announcements, student presentations at assemblies, performing groups, community presentations, songs, skits, student writing, etc.

There is widespread evidence that "ROCKS" has promoted a positive and nurturing school environment. "ROCKS "has become so widespread in the community that we have had feedback from parents that they are reinforcing this message, at home, on a regular basis and "It is Working".

Our statistics clearly give evidence that "ROCKS" has had a tremendous positive influence on our school culture which has contributed to an increase in student learning and less time being spent on student behaviour. It is a real honour and privilege to work at a school where everyone is engaged in supporting students to be successful learners and the whole community living and interacting in a socially responsible manner. Ruth King has a multitude of "ROCK" Stars and is one "ROCKING" School.

Please enjoy this book as the writing and illustrations reflect our students thoughts on "Bullying".
