Excerpt

Chapter 1

"I saw you in my dreams, we were walking hand in hand, on the white sandy beach of Hawaii."
-Isreal Kamakawiwoole-

Cool tropical breezes filled with the scent of the fragrant plumeria flower waft past, stirring emotions of love lost. The setting sun casts its orange hues as lovers stroll along the beach hand in hand. Kahala sits crossed legged on the cooling sand. Her long brown hair flowing with the breeze draping her shoulders like a cloak. Tucked behind her left ear is a single pink plumeria blossom. She removes the flower and twirls it slowly in her right hand as thoughts flow through her mind filling her with overwhelming emotions; feelings of love and pride. She holds the fragrant flower to her nose and inhales its sweet scent.

Tears fill her eyes and Kahala gently wraps her arms around herself as a chill surrounds her. Loneliness has always been Kahala's only companion and she has grown to accept her life but at certain times of the year and certain places emotions overflow with memories of long ago and loves long lost, as it does tonight eighteen years later and hundreds of miles away. Kahala lets her longing for the past overtake her as she reminisces about her life as a young woman.

Kahala Kaikaina grew up on the island of Maui with her mother Kukui, her Tutuwahine Hala, and her Tutukane Noa. She was surrounded by the warmth and affection of a large close-knit family. Her Hawaiian heritage has taught her that respect for her elders and family are of the utmost importance. Tutuwahine has taught Kahala to be humble and trusting. Kahala is naïve and she values her family's opinions and holds their words to heart.
