About the Author

Dr. Maria Adelita Reyes-Velarde works at the National Multiple Sclerosis Society (USA) as Manager of the Underserved Population Programs. She finished her medical degree in Ecuador and worked there as a doctor. When her kids took BMX, she joined the National Commission of Bicicross of the National Association of Cycling in Ecuador as volunteer, and held various positions regionally and nationally, including official representation of the country at numerous International Conventions of the BMX of the International Cycling Union. On 1995 she received a national recognition award for her work in favor of the Ecuadorian children. Shortly after returning to the states, she was diagnosed of a central demyelinizing disease- probable MS. At that moment she decided to change careers and graduated from George Washington University, DC with a degree of MPH-Administrative Medicine Management. Her passion is to empower persons by educating them about their diseases as integral part of their treatment, and health prevention.

La Dra. María Adelita Reyes-Velarde trabaja en la oficina principal de la Sociedad Nacional de Esclerosis Múltiple en los Estados Unidos, donde dirige el Programa para Poblaciones Desatendidas. Comenzó sus estudios de química orgánica/premédica en la Universidad de Cornell y se graduó de medicina en Ecuador donde ejerció su carrera como médico. Cuando sus hijos se interesaron en el Bicicross, se unió como voluntaria a la Comisión Nacional de Bicicross de la Asociación Nacional de Ciclismo del Ecuador, ejerciendo en ella posiciones tanto provinciales, nacionales así como varias representaciones del país en convenciones internacionales del deporte. En 1995 le fue otorgada una placa en reconocimiento por su trabajo en favor de la niñez ecuatoriana. Al poco tiempo de regresar a los Estados Unidos fue diagnosticada con una enfermedad desmielinizante central “probable esclerosis múltiple”. Ahí dio un giro a su profesión e hizo una Maestría en Salud Pública con énfasis en Gerencia Administrativa Médica en la Universidad de George Washington, D.C. Su pasión es poder educar a las personas acerca de sus enfermedades como parte indispensable del tratamiento y la prevención primaria de salud.
