About the Book

On the Canadian Prairies, the weather is a character in its own right. Here the summers are short and precious. In Mr. McCaw Tricks Biscuit three friends, a crow, a cat, a dog, wish to pack as much fun as possible in the short summer. Mr McCaw, the crow is boastful, vain, and given to pranks. In the first book of the series, he plays a mean trick on his friend, Biscuit, the cat. Even Bandit, the big shaggy brown dog with whom she lives, is unkind to her today.

She is not the "sharpest knife in the drawer" but with the help of her owners, Naomi and Greg, she gets through a difficult day. At the end of which, feeling comforted and happy she begins to plot revenge on Mr. McCaw. In the second book of the series, she will succeed with the help of Bandit, whose bark is really worse than his bite.

The series is filled with action, and surprises. Each story is self-contained and fast moving. Naomi and Greg form a good support and back-drop to the antics, zany good humour, conflict resolution in the life and adventures of this fun-loving trio of friends.

This series is intended for children in the 3-6 year old range. Each book stand on its own, and is meant to be read aloud in a vigorous, animated, and fun-loving manner. Children can be encouraged to dramatize the story; they will enjoy making the sounds of the crow, the cat, or the dog while the parent/care-giver can take the part of the humans.

A picture book for pre-school kids, the illustrations alone are worth the cost of the book

A perfect gift for the upcoming holiday season.

About the Author

Ida Richards (author) and Joan Rainford (illustrator) have been friends since they attended the prestigious St. Andrew High School for girls in St. Andrew, Jamaica. After living in different cities in Canada and USA for many years, they are now collaborating on a series of books for pre-school children. The first in the series Mr. McCaw Tricks Biscuit tells of the zany relationships and happenings that take place between three Canadian Prairie friends, a crow, a cat, and a dog and their "humans" Naomi and Greg.

A friendship in high school where Ida excelled in academics and Joan in art, has now blossomed again. The process of producing the book, that began in May 2003, has been a wonderful picking up of slipped threads for these two friends; it has been the highlight for them both - full of creative joy, wonder and splendor despite the distance between their chosen cities. Ida lives in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada and Joan lives in New York City.
