About the Book

Who would think that the life story of Nellie Richner and George Campbell would be told in her letters discovered by her grandchildren eighty years later. The history in these letters and articles she wrote is fascinating. George Campbell emigrated to Canada in 1909 and settled in Saskatchewan. Nellie Richner, also an American and a teacher, after meeting George and corresponding with him, left the riches of Maine in 1920 and travelled to her George and to the then primitive environment of the homesteads.

Nellie's copious letters - mainly to her beloved Auntie Marie - and also to other family members, were saved and passed down to various family members. Sandra Hyslop and Pat Klassen, two of Emerson and Jeannie' Campbell's 10 children, through trips to Maine, calls to Luxemburg and trips to the archives at York University, managed to gather the majority of Nellie's letters and her published articles. Here they have compiled them into an amazing history of these early settlers in Saskatchewan and British Columbia through Nellie's eyes. Her perpetual optimism and cheerfulness under harsh conditions that one can only imagine are an example for those of us that follow.
