I was a police officer in Louisiana for 25 years. My wife and I loved to travel, so when I retired we decided to go on a permanent vacation. We hitched up our travel trailer to our Chevy Suburban and were off on a great adventure.
Excerpts
I retired after being a Police Officer for twenty-five years. We moved out of our house, sold all of our furniture and moved into the 28 foot, travel trailer what we had at the time. We were off on a great adventure in spite of the fact that a lot of friends and some of the family though that we had gone off the deep end! We ignored them and became 'Professional Tourists" or 'Full Timers" as some call us. I want to share with you some of the wonderful places we have been, the people we met, the great things we have done and some of the things that happened to us along the way and some tips on how you can do this too. So pull up a lawn chair up next to the campfire, pour yourself a cup of coffee and come along for the adventure.
I was camped next to an elderly man and his wife, who were staying in a motor home. He came out and started talking to me. (Maybe I came out and started talking to him, because I don*t know any strangers, I just don't know everyone's name!) So, he started telling me that he and his wife had been on the road camping, for TWENTY YEARS!!!!! Needless to say I had about three thousand, four hundred and seventy-six questions that I wanted to ask him. He told me that he had retired and decided to "sell out" and just go on a trip until he got tired of traveling. He was still on the road having a great time after twenty years. He had worn out three motor homes and he needed a new one. He told me that he was going to stop traveling, because his wife was having some physical problems and his eyesight was failing. He couldn*t see to drive as well as he used to. I detected a tear in his eye when he told me that he was going to have to quit traveling. He told me things that he and his wife had seen and done together, places they had visited and people they had met. It was a great story and I was inspired. I don*t remember his name or the brand name of the rig he was driving, other than he was in a motor home. I don't even know if he is still alive (I met him around 1988 and he must have been at least seventy years old then) but he lit a fire under me. For the first time in my life I realized that IT WAS POSSIBLE TO GO ON A VACATION... AND JUST KEEP GOING!!!!!
I got out of bed and got the coffee pot going and got dressed. I couldn't see outside because the canvas walls were all zipped up on the trailer. After I dressed and got the rest of the family up and moving around and as soon as everyone was decent, I unzipped the canvas window that was located behind the dinner table. I looked out and I could not see any land! We were parked in a lake! As far as I could see the campground was under water! I immediately started checking the trailer to see if any water was coming in through the floor.
