About the Book

Gus, a fun-loving kitty, enjoys running around, playing games, feeding his goldfish and going to school with his friends. He is just like every other first grade kitty... except he is smaller than the rest. Gus has learned to overcome his height challenge by using boxes to stand on. He doesn't mind using his boxes; they help him do everyday things, like brushing his teeth. One day at school, Gus is called "runt" by Bud, a third grader. Gus learns to deal with this bully in his own unique way.

About the Author and Illustrator

Sandra Nelson is an instructor of Theatre and Educational Drama at Eastern Michigan University. She holds a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in Drama/Theatre for the Young and a Bachelor of Science in Education.

Hey Runt! is a semi-autobiographical story of Sandra's life. Being only 4'8", Sandra has had to overcome ridicule; learning to cope with something she couldn't change, especially during her early public school years. She hopes this book will allow children, all children, who feel they are unable to accomplish their dreams because of ridicule and challenges, to triumph over adversity and be the best little person they know they can be.

_______________________

Illustrating stories since kindergarten, Crystal Woolard's first story was of Tom the Turtle who flew to outer space. Since then, she decided she should make a career out of the things she loves and will soon be receiving her BFA from Eastern Michigan University in Graphic Design and Theatre Arts. Not only does she love performing on stage and making posters, she LOVES to make all kinds of things with the help of her own cat, Kamikaze.

In 2005, Crystal achieved a lifetime dream of seeing her own illustrations in print and having a chance to play with friends Sandra Nelson and Gus. It doesn't matter how old you are, or how different, you can achieve your dreams if you just stick to them! Enjoy Gus's story.
