About the Book

The idea for the first Gaffa Jack book came about when I bought a beautiful hand built clinker dinghy from a friend of mine who is a boat builder in Cornwall.

I bought the boat to have little trips with my wife Emma and my one year old son jack on nice summer days. I was going to call the boat Jack after my son. The dinghy had a little gaff rig sail with it so the name Gaffa Jack was decided on.

I was originally going to write a few diaries of our little outings on Gaffa Jack, for my son to keep for the future, but as the writing progressed, I realised that there was a character starting to appear which seemed to be a mixture of my son's personality and the personality of the little boat. Gaffa Jack... The Little Boat With a Very Big Smile" was born, and was about to start on a life full of adventure and learning.

I needed to illustrate this little boat well to bring out his character, and so I asked a well known Cornish artist, Celia Duncan, if she would be interested in doing this for me. Celia's paintings of boats all have a story to tell in their own right and I could see that her illustrations would work beautifully with the character of Gaffa Jack. There are lots of adventures still to come with this inquisitive, tenacious, big hearted little boat and his friends.

More Gaffa Jack's adventures to follow.
