About the Book

The book is written about how present-day marine falsework evolved during the 50-year career in which Harold V. Anderson participated in the design and installation work for wharves, piers, breakwaters, bridges and other marine structures for contractors. Reference data and manuals necessary for preparing design calculations are grouped together in a chapter on wharf construction and again in a chapter on bridge construction. Similarly, a compilation of sample calculations for submittal of falsework drawings are provided. Many sketches, details and photographs are included in the book to illustrate how falsework is supported over water. This includes examples of hangars, clamps, collars and every conceivable means which was used to suspend or support girts, joists and soffit materials are shown in detail. All requirements to complete a falsework design for over-water construction is included in this book. All, including some bad decisions which resulted in falsework failures, are desrcibed for the reader's benefit. No other publication has so much information on the subject.

About the Author

Harold V. Anderson, born in 1927 near Brady, Nebraska, attended elementary school in Gothenburg, Nebraska and high school in Ogden, Utah, joined U.S. Navy in 1945, served on USS Triumph-AM323 in 1946, attended Weber Junior College, 1947-1948, and Utah State University, 1949-1950, graduated with B.S. in Civil Engineering, member of honorary society, Tau Beta Pi. First employed by U.S. Bureau of Public Roads, Alaska, next by J.y. Long Engineers, Oakland, CA., then International Engineering Corp., Morrison Knudsen Corp., J.H. Pomeroy Cp., and Ben C. Gerwidk Co., San Francisco. Married to Connie Johnson in 1961, raised a family (Craig, Kristin and Julie) while living in Novato, California. Began international consulting business as H.V. Anderson Engineers in 1971, providing engineering services to marine contractors for installation of submarine pipelines, cofferdam designs, temporary trestles and falsework for construction of wharves and bridges. Fellow, ASCE. Awarded prestigious Golden Beaver for recognition of contribution to the heavy construction industry and author of book, Underwater Construction Using Cofferdams (2002). Retired in 2003.
