About the Book

A young boy is brutally murdered in a cemetery near an iron-mining town in northern Wisconsin. Three decades later, another boy turns up missing, and the cops call him a runaway. But his friend Shane knows better. When former residents return to Harmony for a centennial and high school reunion, Shane also disappears. Albert Emrick, Harold McLanihan, and Bunny Fossness return for the festivities and are drawn into a bizarre mystery that spans several generations. Bunny starts to remember events and dreams that she has forced herself to forget, and they join Shane's dad and Dr. Jeryll Simonson, an expert on iron mining, in search of the boy. Their search takes several bizarre twists that lead them deep inside an abandoned mine, where they become part of a diabolical drama that began in 1927. They find Shane at the mine's fifth level, and discover that the boy will play a major role in their success or failure. They all become involved in a diabolical plot that includes strange rituals, murder, rape and memories they would sooner have left forgotten. Their underground adventure leads them to confrontation with childhood friends and bullies, and they quickly learn that things are not always as they seem. When they come face-to-face with an abomination too evil to describe, they realize they must confront the creature without fear, or perish. Albert, Harold, Bunny, and Shane know that only they can put an end to the tragedies that befell Harmony's children before, and were beginning again. Things quickly spin out of control, and they know they must act quickly to keep the evil from spreading. The fate of the world could hang in the balance.
