About the Book

Traditional cultural holiday celebrations embody people's important beliefs, values, and customs. Teachers can take advantage of the holiday celebration occasions to help students explore and understand cultural differences.

The purpose of this book is to help teachers introduce the Chinese New Year holiday to their students in depth. It goes beyond the traditional fun approach by focusing on the deeper meaning of the Chinese New Year celebration. Students are asked first to reflect on the New Year celebration experiences in their own cultural communities and then to connect their experiences to the traditions, rituals, and customs of the Chinese New Year celebration. The suggested activities and questions introduce them to a more complex picture of the New Year celebration. They challenge students to think about the symbolic meanings involved in the Chinese New Year.

This book targets students from K-12 levels. Teachers can modify the activities based on their students' developmental and cognitive levels and incorporate them into the content areas such as social studies, history, language arts and literacy.
