About the Book

The story is about Jeremiah Goodehand and tells of his life and times in the late 18th century, early 19th century. The son of a shepherd, then workhouse boy, shepherd and free trader, with the ultimate ambition of saving enough money to buy his own farm. Caught by the Revenue men, sentenced to five years I the Royal Navy, he fights in the Battle of Copenhagen and is wounded. Later he joins Nelson's Victory and survives Trafalgar. The crew are paid off, and Jeremiah pursues his dream of owning his own farm, which eventually, he does. Married with two daughters he is desolate when his wife dies giving birth to a son. He works his farm and later remarries and prospers. While at sea Jeremiah made an enemy of a shipmate and this man tracks down Jeremiah and tries to kill him, but for his youngest son firing a shot he would have succeeded. This man, years later, by a chance encounter when being rescued from a shipwreck, tries again to kill Jeremiah but his grandson comes to the rescue. Jeremiah had always expected his sons to carry on hid beloved farm. His eldest son dies and the younger, with a secret desire to go to sea, resigns himself to a farming life. Jeremiah ponders the situation. His life had been saved by his son and now his grandson. Had he the right to tell the boy what he should do? He wanted to go to sea like his father before him but was expected to work the farm...Finally Jeremiah gives his blessing to the boy, and muses that sheep bells ring for some, and ship bells for another...
