Against the backdrop of the former Belgian Congo, a young health officer made his way through the Kivu region of Central Africa seeking to make a difference by helping others. Kivu Safari is the factual account of Claude Deblauwe's journey from Europe into the jungle providing medical care to the rich and diverse inhabitants of the bush. About the Author
Claude Deblauwe came to Africa from Belgium. He graduated from the School of Meterology under the Belgian Air force and was attracted by new programs that taught hygiene in the tropics. He enrolled in the Institute of Tropical Medicine in Antwerp. There he completed his certification to become a Health Officer. Soon after he headed for Africa, he served in public health campaigns with the World Health Organization's anti-malaria programs.
On his return to Belgium, his journey continued when he moved to the United States through Chicago working for the Tuberculosis Division of the Department of Microbiology at the Michael Reese Hospital. Eventually a different calling came and Mr. Deblauwe left the health research field to pursue a PhD in Romance Philology from UC Davis in California. After various teaching posts, Mr. Deblauwe retired from the University of San Francisco where he taught for over ten years.
He currently lives in the San Francisco Bay Area with his wife and children.
