About the Book

In the life of a child, sometimes one act of kindness, one symbolic garment, or a treasured memory helps to kindle and restore a child's sense of hope. Granny's Gown is a story about a little boy and how through his loss he finds a new beginning.

Why, you may have wondered, are long, flannel nightgowns named "granny gowns?" Well, maybe it is because grannies represent comfort, safety and warmth and a long, flannel nightgown possesses all of these same qualities.

This is a story about one silly granny and her long, red, flannel gown, and how it made one little boy feel comfy, safe and warm.

About the Author

Sue McWayne, children's author, reflected on her experience as a social worker, and recalled how some children are gifted with the ability to overcome insurmountable obstacles in their lives. She has always been amazed by the resiliency some children possess.

The author began her career as a medical social worker. As a second year student in a master's degree program she did an internship at a Children's Hospital. Sue worked as a pediatric social worker for children with cancer. It was there that she witnessed an incredible strength of spirit, in their weak and fragile bodies.

As life often does, it took a detour for Sue, from working with children to working with older adults. The health of the older adults she worked with was deteriorating. However, most of them accepted the inevitable conditions brought on by old age. Those who made contributions helping others in life were filled with peace as their lives ended.

You may ask, why is this important to know about the author? In her book Granny's Gown the character of Granny and the little boy are a metaphor for the author's professional career. The book explores the emotions of a young child and an aging adult.

No matter what circumstance life gives you there is always hope. It is an amazing phenomenon how children in the midst of tragedy can find hope in their lives. An older adult, through their warm and caring ways, can restore a sense of self in a child. This is what happens in Granny's Gown. Open the book and your heart will be opened to the understanding of unconditional love. You will sense the importance of the cycle of life. No matter what circumstance a child is born into, it only takes one loving heart to make a difference.
