About the Book

This book combines Janet’s two great loves – writing and baking. But it’s not about recipes. It is about friendship, love and treasured moments.

It’s also a reluctant and rather accidental book.

Janet may be a prolific writer, but a very private person, and therefore a reluctant publisher, and an even more reluctant cookie seller. Accidental, because this book idea came about only after she has been goaded, in late 2004 during a casual conversation, into being an ‘’entrepreneur’’ - selling her shortbread for Chinese New Year.

From shortbread came her friend’s request for oatmeal cookies, and somehow, her ‘’cookie project’’ was born: Janet wanted to create and dedicate a special cookie each to the people who have made an impact in her life.

These special cookies will be freshly-made and sold ‘’on-demand’’, accompanied by a write-up in the jar, published in this book. In this book, Janet has also included accounts of her cherished times with them, and some other related musings.

About the Author

Janet was born in Singapore, in that memorable baby-boom year where KK Hospital made history by breaking a record in its number of deliveries.

Having contributed to an important national statistics upon her entry into the world, she grew up pretty ordinarily though: she battled with her parents, her brother, her lecturers, her classmates and her friends; she struggled in school; she fell intensely in and out of love; she obtained her BA in English Language, English Literature and Philosophy; she sailed through her MA in Mass Communications Research, and then forced herself to work.

She had wanted at first to be a scientist, an artist, a novelist, a fashion designer, a photo-journalist, an architect, a lawyer, a journalist and even – gasp! – a housewife on a farm.

Thankfully, ‘’public affairs and communications’’ chose her, and she has since remained in this field for more than 16 years. Janet now works as a communications professional in a French smart card company.

Her other ‘’work’’ is to create her own world, a world where she can escape, dream, invent and be crazy.

In addition to the frets of her angst-ridden adolescent years (over family, friends and relationship), Janet these days tortures herself with her diligent studies in European languages and her obsession with their confounding grammar. She speaks a good melange of English, French, Spanish and Italian in less-than- perfect grammar, but dreams of being perfect one day, with no mix-up in vocabulary and pronunciation. As for her Mandarin and Hokkien, she simply ‘’wings it’’ and hopes her listeners don’t detect a fanciful cocktail of European accents!

She is a dessert-devourer and keropok-cruncher, but masquerades convincingly as a health and fitness enthusiast, with her boycott of fast-food, finicky food choices and her passion for pilates, yoga, running and gym work-outs.

Being fanatical about semi-precious stones, she has an eclectic collection, built over the years, locally and from her extensive travels.

Janet is a nature-lover, sun-worshipper, manic book-collector, arts-follower, and a magnet for hazards.

She protects her sanity in the real, mad and hazardous world, by being crazy and creative. And here, in this book, she invites you to explore a tiny facet of her creations – cookies.
