About the Book
The History of Sts. Peter & Paul Parish - Beaver, PA tells the story of one of the oldest Catholic parishes in Western Pennsylvania. Beginning with the history of Catholicism in the region, the author takes the reader on a journey through time from when the first Catholic settlers came to the area, to the building of the current church in the early 1970's.
The first Catholic Mass in Beaver County was celebrated in 1749 by Father Joseph Peter Bonnecamps (1707-1790). Fr. Bonnecamps, a Jesuit priest, mathematician, and cartographer, was the chaplain of the French explorers in the area. Born in Vanne, France, Fr. Bonnecamps was accompanying a French expedition in the summer of 1749 when they arrived at the settlement of Logstown along the Ohio River near present day Harmony Township.
The actual completion date of the new Sts. Peter and Paul's first church is not known. However, we do know that the formal deed was delivered on June 26, 1837. Just days later on June 29-the feast day of Sts. Peter and Paul-a formal dedication was celebrated by Bishop Francis Patrick Kenrick of Philadelphia and other priests from St. Patrick's of Pittsburgh.
This book is a detailed look at the people and events that brought about the founding of Sts. Peter & Paul Parish. It also contains a wonderful gallery of photos of the parish throughout the years.
