About the Book
Welcome to the world of Sunni and her friends, Boris Bullfrog, Peggy Bluebird, Skipper O’Possum, Buck Deer, Rodney Squirrel and many other wonderful characters that live in the Deep Woods. Sunni is a young girl who lives far away from the city and has no other children nearby to play with. She discovers a whole new world in the forest that lies beyond the meadow, filled with the mystery and wonder of the forest animals. The forest becomes her playground and the animals her best friends. She grows to know them and they love the way her laughter and smile brightens their days. When the peaceful calm of the Deep Woods is shattered by the blast of a hunter’s rifle, Sunni is terrified. She worries that her friends will not remember the rules of the forest, but then discovers the animals are born with instincts that alert them when danger is near. When the animals come together at the Safe Place where Sunni is anxiously waiting, experiences unfold and lessons are learned that lead to new awareness, acceptance and maturity of the young animals. The first in a series of Sunni books, Danger in the Forest is compelling, humorous, and heartrending. It is filled with feeling and rich imagery of the unique personality of each character right down to the ballerina teardrops that dance in Rolling River. Sunni of the Deep Woods: Danger in the Forest is fourth and fifth grade reading level, and leans toward good comprehension questions. However, the colorful illustrations make it a wonderful read-to book to be shared with younger children.
About the Author
Ruth Cleghorn grew up in rural Southwest Arkansas where her dad first introduced her to the wonders of nature. She spent many hours romping the woods, wading the creeks and making up stories about the animals that lived there. She continued her story telling over the years for her five children, and continues to do so for her 18 grandchildren. She lives with her husband of 43 years in Southwest Arkansas where she writes human-interest features for the local newspaper. Her humorous column about everyday life beneath her family’s cobwebs and dirty laundry is a weekly feature in the Bowie County Life newspaper.
Excerpts
page 5 – Sometimes the fish that lived in Rolling River gently caressed the tears and turned them into tiny whirlpools…dancing ballerinas.
Page 9 – “Skipper! Where is Skipper? Skipper, Skipper…where is Skipper? Oh my, oh my…I can’t find Skipper!” Daisy O’ Possum fretfully paced round and round the tree that held Peggy’s nest.
Page 16 – “Whoo? Whoo?” Thurman Owl questioned from the tip-top of the pine tree where he had been sleeping. “How can a wise old owl get any sleep around here with all this commotion?”
Page 23 – Then the whole sky twinkled as other stars joined Star Light and Star Bright. They nodded to the Man in the Moon, and Sunni swore she saw him wink at her.
