About the Book

What do you do with the computer in your school? Do you use it primarily for your own school tasks? Do your students mainly use it to play games at recess or as a reward for good behavior or work well done? In your already very busy day, how are you going to find time to create lessons that integrate computers into your curriculum? This book provides a systematic scope and sequence of technology-based lessons tied to the elementary school curriculum. There are thirty-six classroom-tested lessons designed for each grade. These lessons will help your students acquire the basic building blocks for computer use that will serve them well in the years to come. Each lesson has instructional objectives, rubrics (scoring guides), and a computer term for students to learn. The materials and methods are listed, and an extensive Appendix provides you with worksheets and guides. It is not necessary to spend money on an extensive software library. Only a suite of software is required (word processor, spreadsheet, presentation software.) Whether you have access to a computer lab or only one computer in the classroom, students will:

  • build up speed in keyboarding both with the regular keyboard and the numeric keypad with a special technique that reinforces touch-keyboarding.

  • learn responsible use of the Internet in a monitored setting.

  • receive instruction in the ethical practices of multimedia use.

  • develop vocabulary strategies.

  • make use of graphic organizers as methods for learning.

  • create study tools for efficient learning.

  • discover ways to use the computer as a presentation device.

  • use lessons that integrate language arts, math, social studies, science, music, and art.

Whether you are a computer novice or expert, you will find Computers in the Classroom to be an essential guide for your classroom.

    Excerpts

    Introduction

One more topic to teach! That is what many teachers are thinking as they are asked to incorporate computers into their class planning. As more schools spend money on computer hardware, teachers will find more computers in their schools. Some teachers feel uncomfortable with computers, or they may look upon them as just one more burden in their already very full days. Some teachers may not have the time or sometimes the expertise to prepare lessons that include the computer as an aid that works with the curriculum. Others may have great lessons but not an organized scope and sequence.

This teaching guide was designed to act as a lesson plan book for teachers. With these lessons, students will learn the terminology and application of technology while using the computer as a tool to assist in the elementary school curriculum. Students will discover ways to improve their study and organizational habits while working with basic skills.

As you use this book you may begin to feel more comfortable with the computer and will be able to create your own lessons. If you feel unsure of your own computer use, you could use this guide as a way to increase your understanding of the computer as a tool for learning. If you already feel comfortable with the computer, you may use the lessons as a jumping-off point for your own curriculum ideas. This book may help you in your teaching whether you feel like a novice when using computers or whether they seem as easy to use as pencil and paper.
