About the Book

Candles on the Pavement tells a story of one ex-patriate's efforts to come to grips with the exotic culture of tropical Brazil. Rich with anecdotes, it is a personal memoir that transports the reader to Rio de Janeiro where the problem of finding somewhere to live immediately arises. So also does the question of finding a maid - necessary to the new way of life - and learning a completely alien language - Portuguese. The book describes the vivid scene of this vibrant city with its strange religious mixture, its magnificent beaches and its famed attractions such as Sugar Loaf and the hunch-back mountain, Corcovado, with its huge Christ statue atop. It also takes the reader on travels around Brazil visiting such cities as Brasilia, Sao Paulo and Salvador as well as spectacles like the magnificent Falls of Iguacu. Candles on the Pavement also shows how Margaret Starks learned to deal with the tricks and wiles of her astute, illiterate but street-wise maid - at the same time exploring the age-old question of who, exactly, has the upper hand in a mutually dependent, master-servant relationship.
